America Is Not The World Lyrics - Morrissey
Review The Song (49)
America your head's too big, Because America, Your belly is too big. And I love you, I just wish you'd stay where you belong
In America, The land of the free, they said, And of opportunity, In a just and a truthful way.
But where the president, is never black, female or gay, and until that day,
you've got nothing to say to me, to help me believe
In America, it brought you the hamburger. Well America you know where, you can
shove your hamburger. And don't you wonder, why in Estonia they say, Hey you, you big fat pig, you fat pig, you fat pig
Steely blue eyes with no love in them, scan the World,
And a humourless smile, with no warmth within, greets the world.
And I, I have got nothing, to offer you
No-no-no-no-no, just this heart deep and true, which you say you don't need
See with your eyes, touch with your hands, please, hear through your ears, know in your soul, please. For haven't you me with you now? and I love you, I love you, I love you. And I love you, I love you, I love you.

??you should always stand up for your country | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/25/11
You are not my people, so quit acting like you speak for anyone, save your functionally illiterate self. The US ranks #1 in only one of the measured categories. Not education, as you so deftly demonstrate. Not manufacturing, nor employment. Not in any other category were we #1, and the category we rank 1st in says it all, and it should terrify anyone of any intelligence, or more importantly, wisdom. Prepare yourselves..
We Rank #1 In Confidence. So essentially, we are never right, but never in doubt, forge ahead. GoOOOO TEAM!

Morrissey is one to talk about bigotry. This is a guy who flirted with white supremacism in the 80s and released blatantly racist songs like "Bengali in Platforms", not to mention the fact that he dismissed the neo-Nazi murders in Norway by calling them insignficant in comparison to people eating meat. Stick it up your ass, Morrissey.
America is not the world it seems to be.... | Reviewer: evalyn | 6/20/11
that is what he is trying to say! America is the land of the free, if that was the case we would not have borders! The only thing that is left for me right now is the freedom of speech to express the need to be heard all across America! This right has not be taken away indeed which I appreciate and respect this country.

Morrissey is only criticising certain aspects of America, not everything about the country. He makes it very clear that he is not just being anti-american in the song. It's sad then that people seem to be so defensive and aggressive towards the song, especially as so much of this is on the back of complete ignorance (one of my favourites being the general concept of 'Kid Rock > Morrissey' [?!?!?!]). Frankly I wonder how many of these people have even left their own redneck states to see what lies beyond. It's a shame. It also must be massively embarrassing towards the many highly intelligent americans out there who actually do know what they're talking about.
No country is perfect. Not mine, not yours, not anyones. To act as if you're country is so superior to the rest of the world makes you come across as nothing more than being a brainwashed fool.

Just shut up everybody and cool down! If you like the song, and you like the meaning of the song, that's cool. If you don't like the song, and you don't like the meaning of the song, that's cool also.
I like this song, because of the clever, interesting and intelligent lyrics, but if you don't like it, or you don't understand it, that's okay.
I do agree with a few people. I'm from Australia, and let me tell you, Australia has a lot of it's own problems, like the West Australian droughts; the floods of the East; the proposed STOP-AND-SEARCH laws in WA; Drugs getting way out of hand; a loss of our own sense of pride and patriotism and the continious scaring of the publice because of stupid 7 news. And I'm 100% positive that the UK has huge problems of it's own.
Now, I don't particularly like America. I don't buy McDonalds; I only like a select amount of music from America; I hate the current occupation of Iraq; I hate how America touts itself to be the land of the free (it is not offically a Capitalist nation, not a Democratic nation), and yet kids are sent to prison without a fair trial for a profit, multi-trillion dollar companies make millions off dead people's insurance and many people live below the poverty line and I hate how American shit TV is constantly beams through my television set and can be called entertainment.
In saying that however, I think America has many good things. I like how their moving forward in having a black president (despite him being treated badly by the media and southeners) and I think the core values of Democracy are absolutely brilliant.
Anyway, I think half of the people from America are cool, so there's no need to stereotype all Americans as fascist supporting, racist, homophobic God-Heathens.
But I believe America needs to change some of it's ways.
Anyway, I sound like a hypocrite, but the point I'm trying to drive home is that people are entitled to your opinions (and I've just had mine) and it's okay. Just don't bag each other all the time. Have some EMPATHY. That's what's wrong with the world. People constantly critise other people for who they are and what they think and it just creates tension. You all sound like very clever people who have constructed great arguements, so why not turn that negative energy into trying to do something great for yourselves and for the world (and yes, I may sound like a pot-smoking hippy [ALL DRUGS ARE PURE EVIL!!!], but I'm definatly not).
Hope this helps you all,

Americans, wake up. | Reviewer: Fred Frithstenberger | 8/14/10
Morrissey is not bashing America, he is merely trying to encourage the country to make some basic progressive moves that the rest of the world have already done and for some reason America doesn't. Black president, yes. This song was written before that happened. He's only the first one in 200 years anyway, not such a big deal. Never a woman president, never an [openly] gay president, never an immigrant. Americans can be president of other countries, why can't people from other places be president of U.S.A? He's just criticizing INEQUALITY. Wake up, silly people.
I'm an American and this offends me | Reviewer: Sam | 3/27/10
not the song but the people defending America. carolyn, your taste in music is absolutely terrible. kid rock? really? Sorry I called you out but if you want to compare Morrissey to American music to belittle him you might want to compare him to some decent music.
I hope that people in other countries don't think all Americans are this arrogant and stupid.
Difference between State Department and American people | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/13/10
There is a basic misunderstanding regarding the song's criticism here: Morrissey is criticizing the American foreign politics, which has been the source of over 120 war conflicts after the WW2, and not the average American citizen. Americans are the first to wonder what are the politicians doing in their name, and why there is animosity towards America throughout the whole world.

"Morrissey, move to Astonia and eat cabbage an sh#t!you unpatriotic peice of uselessness"
Morrissey is from England, he does not have to be patriotic to the USA!
And it is spelt ESTONIA not Astonia!
Thanks again for exhibiting some more of that stellar American intelligence!

America the greatest country in the world? just because the average idiot gets paid more well at least it did for many years but now what is so great? palystation, internet, fast food and new cars?
why are the MOST of the people defending America always the most angry macho arrogant types that can only spit out insults?
where any of you ever taught that being polite might earn you some respect and maybe your arrogance is what makes everybody hate you in the first place.
To prove a point on how America is messed up read the comments by the idiot who says Tupac is good music and if he donesn't know the difference between that crap and something good well maybe he's better off not knowing as to keep the idiots in the dark.
It was great at one time but now its just filled with ignorance and materialist style that makes your life useless.
