It was one hundred degrees
As we sat beneath a willow tree
Whose tears didn't care
They just hung in the air
And refused to fall, to fall
And I knew I'd made a horrible call
And now the state line felt
Like the Berlin wall
And there was no doubt
About which side I was on
'Cause I built you a home in my heart
With rotten wood, it decayed from the start
'Cause you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
I braved treacherous streets
And kids strung out
On homemade speed
And we shared a bed
In which I could not sleep at all
'Cause that night the sun in the trees
Made the skyline look
Like crooked teeth
In the mouth of a man
Who was devouring, us both
You're so cute when you're slurring your speech
But they're closing the bar and they want us to leave
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
I'm a war of head versus heart
And it's always this way
My head is weak, my heart always speaks
Before I know what it will say
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
No you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
And you can't find nothing at all
If there was nothing there all along
There were churches, theme parks and malls
But there was nothing there all along.

I love Death Cab for their mellow sound, amazing lyrics, and effortless way their music gets inside your head. My favorite song is "I Will Follow You Into The Dark," but coming close to that is "Crooked Teeth." I adore all the songs from the "Plans" album. Death Cab never bores me. I never feel like they could have done it better or should revise their lyrics, and I never feel like their music is forced like two puzzle pieces that don't quite line up. Death Cab combines great music and dare I say... poetry, in an ear-pleasing, heart-filling, emotionally-flowing simple symphony!
I have to say, it's really heartfelt and it represents Death Cab in more ways than I thought it would. Negative words, yet made positive. Love it. x
Great Song | Reviewer: Conrad | 8/7/07
Umm...Great song and its one of those songs that has lyrics that just relate to you. Anyhow, I've never read the actual lyrics but I think that it is "tears" hanging from the willow tree because weeping willows (as they're sometimes called) don't actually cry for the narrarator of the song, the tears just hang there.
it's a good song. but when it refers to the willow tree, it should be 'tiers' not 'tears'
Great lyrics | Reviewer: Courtney | 7/18/07
