I found a letter that said:
"I'm sorry that you were asleep when I wrote these words down,"
You'd think I'd ought to be used to that by now.
Save for a few of those late night episodes,
Missed opportunities, and "I Don't Cares,"
There's not a lot that I feel obliged to share or talk about.
I'll have my brother stop by this Saturday to pick up my things,
Just make sure you're not there.
This may sound bad, and don't take it the wrong way..
I love you, however,
You hold me down <i>[x4]
You're the echoes of my everything,
You're the emptiness the whole world sings at night.
You're the laziness of afternoon,
You're the reason why I burst and why I bloom.
How will I break the news to you? <i>[x2]
Cancel our dinner with Max and Coraline,
feed Jacky's gerbil and try to stay clean.
We'll talk it over after I've had some time alone to sort it out.
You hold me down <i>[x4]
You're the echoes of my everything,
You're the emptiness the whole world sings at night.
You're the laziness of afternoon,
You're the reason why I burst and why I bloom.
You're the leaky sink of sentiment,
You're the failed attempts I never could forget.
You're the metaphors I can't create to comprehend this curse that I call love..
How will I break the news to you? <i>[x5]

I listen to mcs and im also straight but some people are missing the point to this song. one person thinks its a guy that wrote the letter. and its not about taking time to fall back into love. i cant believe how you miss the meaning to the song. its all about the struggles of a relationship and a bad one at that. so stop looking so deeply into the meaning of this song and just appreciate it for what it is.
this song is my favorite by MCS. They are definitely my favorite band. i think the meaning of this song is pretty obvious. but it is by far the most beautiful and meaningful song i think MCS has written. I'm now looking into getting this portion of the song tattooed on me

am i the only straight male that listens to motion city soundtrack. your all fgts. gayest reviews ive ever read. "endless application of this song" "girls want guys to hold them down" blah blah. you people make me sick
hey
yeah my brother is best frinds with justin from MCS.. and justin says that this was an actual letter this girl jacklynn wrote to him after they broke up.. so for the people wondering if it was a letter, the answer is yes. it is. and jacklynn was refurring to 'holding me down' as justin was holding her back from her real dreams becuase he was just staying in minnesota and doing nothing.. then after he read this letter, thats when he and the band started geting their act together and now known as Motion City Soundtrack!
ah yeah tahts the real story

Well I think that this song's meaning is endless.
There is no way for the guy to truly let go.
He needs time alone to think, to fall back in love. But he doesn't want her to let go of him.
He wants her to hold him down, to make sure he doesn't fly away from her. Because he doesn't want to forget such a beautiful love. He doesn't want to live with the doubt, "We could have made it...♥"

is haunting me at the moment.
yesterday, my bf broke up with me, and he is the biggest mcs fan i know.
before thing went downhill, we layed in my room watching the dvd that came with his commit this to memory cd. when we watched this video, we layed in complete silence.
this song had been running through my head all day, it really is haunting me...
but i love it, its beautiful.

I think the song is sort of the outline of the letter that he finds in the morning...she's telling him how much he means to her, but she knows she needs to move on with her life because she thinks he's holding her back from her potential, but she has no idea how to say that without sounding/feeling like a horrible person.

I think that this song is him trying to tell her how much he loves her, but she's holding him back from things he needs to do. I love this song....I recently went through a bad relationship, and it was hard to let go. Hold Me Down is exactly how I felt, and still do. You love someone so much--but you still NEED to let go of them.....how do you tell them? That's the way I understand the song
Really excellent | Reviewer: Eric | 1/2/08
I was watching a music channel once, and the band said that for the song, they were trying to create a mood rather than tell a story. Either way, it's a beautiful song. Anyone know when these guys are coming to Chicago?

I think that in the song his gf wrote the letter explaining that she needs space and he is holding her down....
I think that he is the one saying how will i break the news to you. he is wondering how he is gonna tell her that she is everything to him...
I love this song...its very touching.
