Mama, she has taught me well
Told me when I's young
Son, your life's an open book
Don't close it 'fore it's done
The brightest flame burns quickest
That's what I heard her say
A son's heart's owed to mother
But I must find my way
Let my heart go
Let your son grow
Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still
"Rebel", my new last name
Wild blood in my veins
Apron strings around my neck
The mark that still remains
left home at an early age
Of what I heard was wrong
I never asked forgiveness
But what is said is done
Let my heart go
Let your son grow
Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still
Never I ask of you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
Never I ask of you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
So let this heart be still
Mama, now I'm coming home
I'm not all you wished of me
But a mother's love for her son
Unspoken, help me be
Oh Yeah I took your love for granted
And all the things you said to me
I need your arms to welcome me
But a cold stone's all I see
Let my heart go
Let your son grow
Mama, let my heart go
Or let this heart be still
Let my heart go
Mama, let my heart go
You never let my heart go
So let this heart be still
Never I ask of you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
Never I ask of you
But never I gave
But you gave me your emptiness
I now take to my grave
So let this heart be still

Review about Mama Said Great song | Reviewer: Jon | 2/14/10
To start, this is in the top 10 Metallica songs for me personally. It's so emotional, it is sang so beautifully, it shows the many dimensions Metallica covers, and I absolutely love the guitar in the background on it, along with the beautiful acoustic guitar at the forefront. Not to mention the great lyrics that are deep and can probably strike a note with most people. 10/10
In regards to an earlier post, even though I believe that some epic trolling is going on, some people can be really close minded when it comes to music. Yeah Metallica sure as hell are pussies for diversifying their style of playing, that makes complete sense (sarcasm). The speed metal thing was becoming played out, and they really hit their limit with '...And Justice for All' in my opinion and has been stated by members of the band. If Metallica failed to evolve it would've most likely died out like most of the metal bands from the 80's did. Instead they challenged themselves musically and managed to stay on top for two more decades. Again, you're entitled to your own opinion so believe that if you want. But Metallica recently released a platinum album and are still selling out arenas all over the world so I guess most people would disagree with you.
And how does Metallica suck without Dave when he didn't even record their first album with them? He was on some demos and that's about it.
OK, first of all, this isn't the best song from Metallica, even when it's full of meaning and the lyrics are beatiful, it's a standard rock-pop ballad from the mainstream period of the band. I know many people love this because they feel conexion with the story, but when they say "best Metallica song ever" they're ignoring all their thrash metal classics, their almost PERFECT songs, Master, Ride the Lightning, Seek and Destroy, One, Fight Fire with Fire...
My favourite 'tallica song is Unforgiven I, it has special meaning to me, but I know it's not better than For Whom the Bell Tolls. It's not the best they can do.
a great song | Reviewer: Elbereth | 2/4/10
it seems like a conuntry song but if you analize the sound of both guitars you will think thats a masterpiece, I like megadeth too (acording to the another comments) but that song I must admit is a very beautiful piece on guitar, I know it because I play the guitar too, I love heavy metal, but I never forget masterpieces like this one.
I recommend just to enjoy the song by itself, forhet about styles this time, and just listen and enjoy a great song.
(sorry for my poor english, I speak spanish,)
Great Song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/8/10
Bob, Really? Dave? No. Yes this song has a 'country flare' to it but thats no reason to say this makes them has beens. In case you haven't noticed, Metllica is a very versatile band. After listening to this song I think it would have sounded better and fitted their style if played more like Fade to Black. However I'm not the artist. It was written like this for a reason.
Metallica is the best. | Reviewer: Sakib | 12/18/09
I can really feel da emotions of dis song...this song is so touchy nd emotional.."" I need your arms to welcome me
But a cold stone's all I see"" these two lines reminds me of ma past... it reminds me of a person who died 5 years ago....JAMES u r da best.... u r a great lyricist nd Singer as well as Guitarist..I love u nd METALLICA 4eva!!!!!
Country Song? Seriously? | Reviewer: RICK | 12/1/09
Listen bob. This song isn't a country song. James wrote it about his mother who died when he was 16. You obviously aren't a true Metallica fan if your sitting there calling them a bunch of has beens. This is what makes Metallica so great. They can play all this heavy metal, yet still have a sensitive side. If you don't like it. Then don't listen. It's that simple.
P.S.
If you honestly believe that Metallica isn't the same without Dave..... Go back to your Megadeth albums :)
not my cup of tea | Reviewer: bob | 11/29/09
i think this song is sums up what metallica has become. a group of has beens. i mean come on it's a country song. what pussies. its ok to write and sing the song but don't put a name like metallica on it. really they should changed their name after cliff died anyway. metallica ain't metallica without cliff and dave.
in my opinion, this song doesn't belong to metallica,it belongs to James. It reminds me of a very close person that to me she was like a mother, even more...I really understand this song and the lyrics are very powerful.I just would like to say-thank you James, for making me feel good, and sorry about what you've gone through...
Best Metallica song EVER!! | Reviewer: Bri | 8/29/09
I absolutely love this song!!! It's my fave off Load. It's just such a beautiful song. I feel so sorry for James, cuz because of their religion(Christian Scientist) they didn't believe in doctors/medicine, so she never went for treatment or anything. That must've been so hard for James to have to watch his mother die like that. Whenever I hear the line "I need your arms to welcome me, but a cold stone's all I see" it just really hits me. This song really moves me. I'm working on learning it on guitar.
for me, this song reminds me of a reacent death in my family and whenever i hear this song it not only brings back the pain, but also the times we had before. i feel like i share something with metallica (james) and all the other people who feel something when they hear this song. long live metallica.
