i think this song is simply the moment of those days/weeks/years after a sad breakup when both of them still moving on from their feeling. So sad that even asking about each other condition will make them feel the bitterness. The love is still lingering in their heart but they have to stick to their decision to end their relationship.

Okay, first of all it's written from POV of the person who was called. Still a little bitter and sad about the way the love affair ended. To me, I think the person who called wanted to hold onto to some kind friendship, but the ex couldn't do because he isn't ready for that yet. Been through that when I had an ex who called me outta the blue. I wasn't ready either so I could totally relate.
