THE TOURIST Lyrics

Review The Song (13)Print the Lyrics
It barks at no-one else but me,
like it's seen a ghost.
I guess it's seen the sparks a-flowin,
no-one else would know.
Hey man, slow down, slow down,
idiot, slow down, slow down.

Sometimes I get overcharged,
that's when you see sparks.
They ask me where the hell I'm going?
At a 1000 feet per second,

hey man, slow down, slow down,
idiot, slow down, slow down.

Hey man, slow down, slow down,
idiot, slow down, slow down.

Review about THE TOURIST

Love it! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/25/09

I love this song, reminds me to smell the roses, you know?
But I always found it odd that he says 1000 feet per second... hes from England so there must be some reason he didn't use the metric system, makes me wonder if the song is about americans.

"The Tourist" was chosen as the album's final song, according to Yorke, "because a lot of the album was about background noise and everything moving too fast and not being able to keep up. It was really obvious to have "Tourist" as the last song. That song was written to me from me, saying, "Idiot, slow down." Because at that point, I needed to. So that was the only resolution there could be: to slow down."

"actually, not to crash on your guy's parade or anything, but i was talking to thom the other day and he was talking about the tourist simply being about reveling a sexual experience that was going way too fast... thats all."

Complete bull... first of i highly doubt you talked to Thom Yorke and secondly Johnny Greenwood wrote this song.

I believe many have not seen the darker side of the song. Yorke seem to suffer from some form of depression (as do many artist) 'The black dog' as Churchill would call it. "It only barks at me"......
"I guess it's seen the sparks a-flowin no-one else would know..
"sometimes I get overcharged that’s when you see the sparks". ..
'Sparks' are references to his experiences of flashing lights, a side effect of serious bi-polar disorder. There is a note in Wiki on Thom Yorke that states - 'Yorke said he "hit the self-destruct button pretty quickly"; he would drink alcohol heavily, which resulted in him randomly cutting his hair off and being unable to perform'
In many ways it would not give cause to cure such an illness or the brilliance of many artist such as Thom Yorke would never to have blessed our ears.
I love the track, to me one of the best songs ever written, although it's addictive like 'Everything In its Right Place' and makes life hard to function after if it touches the intended target.

life is a beauty | Reviewer: arthur | 3/1/09

sometimes u just dont appreciate life and all the beautiful things. when i listen to radiohead and this song, i again realize that i really need to slow down and enjoy every second of my life because it's all senseless if ur in a hurry and life just passes by, ur a stranger a tourist who has no relation to the circumstances.

The song has a deep philosophical meaning, I believe. Everybody talks about the part wich says 'slow down, slow down', but I think there's something else that deserves more attention. When the lyrics say 'It barks at no-one else but me/like it's seen a ghost/I guess it's seen the sparks a-flowing/no-one else would know/Sometimes I get overcharged/that's when you see sparks'

I believe it's talking about a feeling that could only be experienced these years. It's seclusion, solitude, you notice that everything is strange, everything is OUT THERE, everywhere you go you are a tourist, nothing belongs to you: HERE is not a place to be shared. Well, that's my opinion, I like to think it that way. A nice song, not my favourite, but I really like it.

:)

Idiot, slow down! | Reviewer: Andy | 9/6/08

This song seems to me to be an underrated Radiohead song. It is possibly my favorite Radiohead song.

My favorite lyric happens to be "Idiot, slow down..." When Thom sings this, I feel he is speaking directly to my neurotic brain. Even though that may not be what the song was intended to be about.

In a way I think it was, though. Even if you're an idiot driving too fast, you're out of control. Just like thoughts can get out of control. Idiot, slow down. Yeah.

I was mistaken. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/3/08

For the longest time, I thought it was "Hey man, settle down, settle down," which I think would've been superior. A critique of our nomadic existence and a wider reading of the concept of "tourist".

Thom said... | Reviewer: JoeGod | 5/24/08

...it was written by Jonny Greenwood while they were in Paris.
A large group of American tourists were scrambling around the city trying to see everything in an hour.
He, like reviewer "A" said...he was shocked at how they couldn't just slow down and take in everything they were seeing. Such a beautiful city.

This song, and "Lucky" really end the album so greatly.
Such beautiful music.
