Pride you took
Pride you feel
Pride that you felt when you'd kneel
Not the word
Not the love
Not what you thought from above
It feeds (it feeds)
It grows (it grows)
It clouds all that you will know
Deceit
Deceive
Decide just what you believe
I see faith in your eyes
Never you hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail
Follow the god that failed
Find your peace
Find your say
Find the smooth road on your way
Trust you gave
A child to save
Left you cold and him in grave
It feeds (it feeds)
It grows (it grows)
It clouds all that you will know
Deceit
Deceive
Decide just what you believe
I see faith in your eyes
Never you hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail
Follow the god that failed
(solo)
I see faith in your eyes
Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail
Follow the god that failed
Pride you took
Pride you feel
Pride that you felt when you'd kneel
Trust you gave
A child to save
Left you cold and him in grave
I see faith in your eyes
Never your hear the discouraging lies
I hear faith in your cries
Broken is the promise, betrayal
The healing hand held back by the deepened nail
Follow the god that failed
Follow the god that failed

Review about The God That Failed Oh my god..You guys.. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/12/09
Everyone is talking about God and religion but a whole part has to do with his dad who left him and his mother and after, his mom died from cancer.
"Find your peace
Find your say
Find the smooth road on your way
Trust you gave
A child to save
Left you cold and him in grave"
This, however, explains how his dad left them behind and the sentence "Broken is the promise" also refers to his dad. People talking about God either are dyslectic/foreign with a lack of English understanding. Although the death of his mother had to do with their religion it doesn't say the whole song is about that and that alone.

Against Religion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/17/09
I think that this is less of an attack on God and more of an attack on religion. James was a Christian Scientist, and both of his parents died of cancer when he was young because they didn't believe in modern medicine. So you can understand his ill feelings towards religion.
I'm allergic to religion. | Reviewer: Ugh | 6/2/09
You guys are making me throw up. I'm allergic to religion! And it was a surprise attack, too. I came here, looking up lyrics to a good Metallica song, and I find a bunch of posts filled to the brim with religious crap. Come ON. Take this to a Bible forum. No one cares. Well, no one who matters cares.

dont be stupid! james grow up with an christian family (mother) and she belived that god heals every wound, so his mother didnt want medicine or any help with cancer, and waited to god wanna help her, and this song is, the god that failed? she is dead right? yeah!!
Actually James is an atheist i believe. This song was written for the death of his mother who died of cancer always believing God would save her despite Jame's "discouraging lies" i.e. medicine, hence "broken is the promise" i.e. his mother's faith with no answer from the "God that failed". Cancer, "it feeds, it grows" of his mother and her death are also the themes of the song "Until it sleeps" with the exact same meaning. But i think James is an atheist; just look at "Leper Messiah"

James | Reviewer: is | 1/5/09
I heard that james hetfield made this song because of how he was brought up. I think hes a catholic, so he actually is religious, but i think he wrote this song to show how (religiously) he was brought up. Im might be, and probably am wrong... Anyone want to back me up on that?
fuck religion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/27/08
fuck religion is all i have to say, it has brought nothing but bad times to this world, countless wars fought over religion, and arrgence telling others that their beliefs are wrong. fuck religion, its the worst drug on this world

i am posting a reponse to the anonymous writer on 3/26/2008 you are so fucking up the bible bashing ass of religion that you have failed to comprehend what it is that this song is trying to convey unlike david who wrote on 8/4/2008 and completely comprehended the authors intentions with this song
james' mother | Reviewer: David | 8/4/08
i would imagine this song is about james' mother who died of cancer
she wouldn't accept medicine, she had complete faith in god to keep her alive, so in james' eyes our god is 'the god that failed'
thats what i think why he wrote the song and the theme for the song, the message must be to not put your life in your gods hands
