"Find your peace Find your say Find the smooth road on your way Trust you gave A child to save Left you cold and him in grave" This, however, explains how his dad left them behind and the sentence "Broken is the promise" also refers to his dad. People talking about God either are dyslectic/foreign with a lack of English understanding. Although the death of his mother had to do with their religion it doesn't say the whole song is about that and that alone. James was a Christian Scientist, and both of his parents died of cancer when he was young because they didn't believe in modern medicine. So you can understand his ill feelings towards religion. This song was written for the death of his mother who died of cancer always believing God would save her despite Jame's "discouraging lies" i.e. medicine, hence "broken is the promise" i.e. his mother's faith with no answer from the "God that failed".
