Review The Song (7)Print the Lyrics
Messenger of Fear in sight
Dark deception kills the light

Hybrid children watch the sea
Pray for Father, roaming free

(chours)

fearless Wretch
insanity!
He watches
lurking beneath the sea...
Great Old One
forbidden sight!
He searches...
Hunter of the Shadows is rising
imortal
in maddness you dweel

Crawling Chaos, underground
cult has summoned... twisted sound!

Out from ruins once possessed
fallen city, living death

(chours)

Not dead which eternal lie
stranger aeons Death may die

drain you of your sanity
face The Thing That Should Not Be

(chours)

Review about The Thing that Should Not Be

Lovecraft | Reviewer: C | 2/28/10

The song is a lovecraft mashup. I agree it does have Cthulhu overtones but some of it is not from Cthulhu Mthos lore.

"Great Old One" is Lovecraft Necronomicon lore. Cthulhu is refered to as great deep one. Great old one is the evil found in the necronomicon stories.

"Not dead which eternal lie stranger aeons Death may die" is read as "That is not dead which can eternal lie, and with strange aeons even death may die." in the lovecraft story "Nameless City" which is stated to be the song of the mad arab Alhazred who Lovecraft said wrote the necronomicon.

"Crawling Chaos, underground
cult has summoned... twisted sound!" This also suggests "Nameless City" since Cthulhu and deep ones come from the see and not underground. "and in my fevered state I fancied that from some remote depth there came a crash of musical metal to hail the fiery disc" said lovecraft about the noice he heard at dawn from the nameless city.

"Out from ruins once possessed
fallen city, living death" suggest numerous stories but again i feel it points directly to the nameless city.

"in maddness you dweel" is a reference to Lovecraft Necronomicon lore but "drain you of your sanity" is Lovecraft Cthluhu Mythos.

No satanic references are made. If you haven't read Lovecraft, you should he is the insperation of all current horror writers.

R.I.P Cliff
(its about lovecrafts book not satan)

H.P. Lovecraft | Reviewer: Jesus | 10/27/09

It's about the Cthulhu
"that is not dead which can eternal lie and with strange aeons even death may die" is a quote from the book, pretty similar to the lyrics. "Drain you of your sanity" The Cthulhu, quite literally, drains peoples sanity. "Hunter of the Shadows is rising" Yeah, the Cthulhu lives pretty deep underwater, in some ruined city I'm guessing. I don't know much about the Cthulhu myself but I'm sure theres more connections in there anyway.

Definitely a Cthulhu Reference | Reviewer: Dylan | 5/23/09

There are so many things in this song that point to Cthulhu. It continuously references insanity, which is what Cthulhu was supposed to do to people, if I'm not mistaken. "Lurking beneath the sea" Cthulhu dwells in a sunken city and is seen as a giant squid like monstrosity. "Great Old One" Cthulhu was one of the old gods in Lovecraftian literature. I don't know what's up with people thinking every freaking Metallica song is about Satan. I swear, nearly every time I try to look up song lyrics, some guy always thinks the song is about the devil.

Not about Satan... | Reviewer: Vladek | 5/9/09

It's not about Satan. It is a clear reference to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu. This song's writing was influenced by Cliff Burton's fascination for Lovecraft's novels. Also, the chromatic chord progression found in The Call of Cthulhu is found here, and, as a reviewer state before me, it takes a quote from the fictional book of the Necronomicon found in "Cthulhu Mythos".

The Thing That Should Not Be | Reviewer: Nick | 4/29/09

I think that it's about like the devil or something like the Grim Reaper with things like "Hunter of the Darkeness" and "Messenger of Fear Insight." Because there are lots of satanic groups that worship the devil, so yeah whatever, but it is still a great song and it's one of my favourites.

Thingy | Reviewer: James | 2/12/08

This song could be considered another use of H.P. Lovecraft's ideals. It seems to be about an insanity-driving "god" that is worshipped by the cult and "Hybrid children", the cult being Lovecraft's Greenland cult from "Cthulhu Mythos". They summon the "Twisted Sound", which might hint to Lovecraft's theme of insanity-driving extreme reality, also hinted by "Drain you of your sanity, face The Thing That Should Not Be", which also comes from his use of mind-bending paradoxes and anomalies. They've even taken almost a direct quote: "Not dead which eternal lie, stranger eons death may die" comes from the couplet: "That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange aeons even death may die". A great song to listen to, in my opinion.
