It's Not About GOD | Reviewer: Sara | 10/8/07
Anonymous posted on 10/6/07 stated that it was about God. It's not about God and dealing with him. On a mtv live performance Jared states, "this is a song.. called The Kill. But don't be scared, this is a nice song. About losing your mind." Which, if you saw the video.. which everyone should have by now, you'd see that. Hence the two different versions of them. If you watch the directors cut of the video, there's also a part where the members talk about Jared acting differently, losing his mind. Here's the dialog.
Tomo: "What the f*ck man? We were supposed to be here for three days. We've been here for a f*cking week. How many more shows are we going to cancel?"
Matt: "He's acting like a f*cking freak."
Shannon: "He's usually never this weird. Has anybody been feeling strange lately?"
There you go. and if you want to watch the directors version..it's on youtube.
His dialog is with God. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/6/07
I see something completely different in these lyrics than what has been described previously. What I see is a dialog with God. He has a dual nature; one that wants to serve God, and one that wants to serve his own desires, and this torments him. He feels burdened by the life that he feels God has called him. His relationship with God is very frustrating to him.
Speaking to God (a prayer of desperation):
“What if I wanted to break
Laugh it all off in your face
What would you do?(Oh,Oh,Oh,Oh)
Here he is telling God he doesn’t feel able to live the life that God has called him to live. It feels like too heavy of a burden placed on him; too much for him to bear. So he cries out in extreme anger toward God.
What if I fell to the floor
Couldn't take this anymore
What would you do, do, do?”
Here his anger falls away, and what remains at the core is his weakness. Instead of cursing God as in the last verse, he is crying out asking God what will happen if he is unable to make the journey.
“Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me”
But here, he is asking God to break him of his desire to succumb to his own sinful heart, even if that means death (or perhaps he would prefer death than the life of torment that currently consumes him).
“I am finished with you”
The ultimate expression of his frustration with God.
“What if I wanted to fight
Beg for the rest of my life.
What would you do?(Do,do)”
Here I see him evaluating all of his options with his relationship with God. He now is asking God what if he wanted to continue the struggle in his relationship, even though it is not a relationship of peace and love, but more of painful discipline, begging God for his forgiveness for the rest of his life.
“You say you wanted more
What are you waiting for
I'm not running from you (from you)”
The Bible talks about God wanting more from us in terms of a relationship. Here he is asking God why this relationship is so complicated? What are you waiting for God? I am ready and willing, but I need you to show me.
“Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you”
“I tried to be someone else
But nothing seemed to change
I know now: this is who I really am inside
I Finally found myself
Fighting for a chance
I know now, THIS IS WHO I REALLY AM”
Here is his brutally honesty plea to God. Telling him that he has tried to be who he thought God wanted him to be, or who the world somehow expected him to act if he truly believed in God, but that he cant do it.
Come, break me down
Bury me, bury me
I am finished with you, you, you
Look in my eyes
You're killing me, killing me
All I wanted was you
Come, break me down
Break me down
Break me down
What if I wanted to break...? (You say you wanted more, what are you waiting for? (bury me) I'm not running from you...)
What if I, what if I, what if I... (bury me, bury me)
