A perfect song | Reviewer: Nyarlathotep | 7/13/09
I have to agree that this song details loss and weakness, but like most good songs you can read almost anything you want into the lyrics. I believe it was said that all good songs are like that and this is true. Total respect...

I think its a song about wanting to be in denial. Something bad is happening to this person which is killing this person (in metaphor or maybe literally), either way he knows about what is happening and he thinks its well deserved (such a lovely color for you..). He justifies himself by saying that he's never known how to confront or deal with problems (ill just lay here in the shallow cuz I dont know how to swim).
Jason's view | Reviewer: Anonymous | 5/2/09
I believe "Best to keep things in the shallow end cuz I never quite learned how to swim" refers to his fear of dwelling into unfamiliar waters, that is to say he refuses to accept things that make him uncomfortable.
"I close my eyes just to look at you" means he cannot face reality therefore still sees her as she was and not as what she has become.
"Just ignore the smoke and smile" He ignores his denial and delusions (his own setup of smoke and mirrors)
"Taken by the seamless vision" Consumned and convinced by the unconstructed and pure illusion.
It seems the main theme is denial and his incapability to help her. Well that's my view, sorry if it was too long guys.
this is it | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/27/09
she is sad.. he knows it.. yet he cannot give her what she wants from him.. because what she wants is not within the person he is.. yet he still loves her.. much as he can.. truth be told they will both suffer until he finds the true cure that will work for both of them..
they hurt each other..
they need each other..
and they are doing the exact same thing..
like yin and yang
CALL IT AFTERMATH | Reviewer: Nancy | 1/18/09
they are saying "call it aftermath, shes turning blue"
the girl in the song overdosed on drugs. Turning blue is an aftermath.
the man in the song was too high to do anything. the song is directed toward a friend of the bands.
Calling out too much | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/11/08
The sound of the song is kind of hypnotic. Like spiralling in a circle kind of weird way. Anyways I think in the chorus I think he is saying "Calling out too much, she's turning blue". This could go with the denial of addiction and overdose by the old Cry Wolf. The addicted person is calling out for help but everyone is in denial of it, or they think it's a false alarm.
Addiction | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/25/08
Anonymous nailed it, Maynard says on the commentary of aMotion this song is about a person refusing to acknowledge that someone they love is an addict. Even when they overdose 'turning blue' the person in denial is like, "That's a good look for you, it matches your eyes."

As with all music, music is art, and art was created by the human race to form a way to escape reality and connect with others. Art was also invented to make the mind wonder and invent "Self Answers" to questions posed. There is no absolute correct answer for what this song means, but there is an illusion that you create yourself in your own mind, and that is the answer to the question posed. The question "What does it mean to You"
Wow | Reviewer: C | 4/2/08
I honestly have no idea how to explain my feelings about this song. It is so hauntingly beautiful, and at the same time very powerful. I've listened to it so many times, yet I've never really looked up the lyrics until now (there were only one or two words I wasn't sure of, like "call it aftermath"). But yeah, wow. One of my favorites by APC for sure.
My Interpretation | Reviewer: Dan | 3/20/08
I think the water is symbolic of emotion, and not swimming is not exploring the emotions. As a result, there were feelings for someone which didn't get explored, so they drowned (and turned blue). But at least it matches their eyes really well.
