meaning | Reviewer: lora | 1/27/08
I think in this song Maynard is singing about abortion. It's clear from the very beginning of the song when he sings: "One womb, one shame, one resolve" - Meaning, one womb, one shame ( I guess the shame of having a baby growing inside of you) and one resolve (one option, to abort) and then "Liberate this will, to release us all" - suggesting that this is the fairest option for both parties. Then the lyrics: "Gotta cut away, clear away, snip away and sever this, umbilical residue, keeping me from killing you" is a straightforward description of the procedure.
Good song | Reviewer: Joe | 1/25/08
I think many APC songs are very good and Mer De Noms album is brilliant along with Thirteenth step. I hate the fact that all these songs turn into religious debates on these websites there about reviewing the song, not praising MJK and slating all the other band members. If you want to do that create your own Fansite or visit an existing one and do it. However I do like the Idea's behind this song
story | Reviewer: Esmeralda Rodriguez | 12/4/07
Actually this song is based on a greek myth about Agamemnon's son Orestes. His mother Clymenstra kills his Agamemnon when he come's back from the Trojan war and Orestes is torn between avenging his father's death and killing his own mother or not dong anything at all.
Wow | Reviewer: Kitty | 11/8/07
I love this song so much, I can't get it off of my mind, but this happens a lot with songs from A Perfect Circle and Tool. It moves me and helps me think and reach a peace of mind.
By the way, to "Jay", you know, you may believe so, but others don't. To me, a lot of the bible is, of so, complicated and.. condradicting, I guess, like the parts you quoted on the sins people commit. If "God" hates them so much, why create the ability for people to do them, if "He" really does exsist? Why would he claim to "love all of his childern" yet, hate on them for commiting the wrongs that he gave them the ability to do? If "God" is the one who created everything we see here, then why not just take away all the sins, why not take away everything that makes our world horrible and hard to live in? This is why I can not bring myself to believe that there is a "God" of which you speak of, and I can not bring myself to read such a backwards book.
What you preached about is all your opinion and nothing more. When they find 100% evidence that the bible and "God" is real, then preach about it all you want, but until then, think twice before you preach. There are other people around with other religions and you can't think that what you were taught on such things is 100% correct and should be accepted by everyone.

This song personally, I think about birth. "Give me one more medicated peaceful moment", when the doctor gives the mother drugs to soothe the pain, or "Gotta cut away, clear away
Snip away and sever this
Umbilical residue,
Keeping me from killing you", obviously you tie off the umbilical cord, and doing so keeps from the baby killing the mother.
I really wish I could explain it the way it comes in my head. Words just don't fit.
analysis | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/11/07
Your analysis is very personal but seemingly far from the intention of Maynard the title denotes.
Orestes was the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestre (sorry bout the names, not sure about them since english is not my mother language). Clytemnestre along with her lover Aeghistus murdered Agamemnon at his return from Troy, and attempted to kill her own son. His sister Elektra managed to have Orestes escape to Mount Parnassus. Eight years later, he was ordered by the Oracle of Delphi to return to Athens and slay his mother and her lover, which he eventually did with the help of his sister. The Gods, upset about that maricide, sent the Erynies to torture him. He eventually got forgiven his murder during a trial Athena organised, and went on to become king of Mycenae, Argos and Laconia, before dying of a snake bite in Arcadia.
The intention behind these lyrics lies somewhere there, behind this unexplicable yet human desire to kill our genitors to acquire an existence of our own.
This is seemingly a very personal and modern transposition of this specific desire incarnated in the Orestes myth. You are correct in the way that the christian dogma does evoke maricide, although this is not a central node to it.
The lexical fields used refer to the author being traped as though still being part of the mother womb, perceived as being the perfect place, the perfect circle, the place before consciousness began, where things weren't misshapen yet by the influence other people's percpetion have on our own. That place before loneliness begins, the loneliness of our own flesh, of our own thoughts, that words will never be capable to envelop and convey to anyone.
The symbolic action of being born a second time through murder is very ancient and runs through mankind, whether one is aware of this or not.
It is obviously a source of intense anxiety for Maynard, for the morale environment he lives in looks down upon this taboo.
This song is deep in the way that it renders limpid the fact that Maynard is in touch with the mecanisms that lie beneath his visible behavior, he knows he feels this desire, and confronts it with his perception of reality, that he knows to be somewhat forced upon him . This confrontation results in anxiety, as do all desires sealed within myths, that forge the social and moral perimeter our Occident civilisation is imerged in.
This guy has empirically understood a lot (and most likely is eager to understand the world he lives in through himself) and shows a lot a that understanding (whether consciously or not) in his lyrics.
These knowledge and doubt about himself both allow him to metamorph reality, to plunge his percpetion of the world into a musical environment, into songs which turn out to be artistically beautiful.
One must remain careful with trying to find out more about his intentions, for the knowledge he has of his behavioral structure allows him to go against it to some extent, to define himself in other ways, ways that are by the way not necessarily contrary to his natural tendencies.
hypnotizing | Reviewer: Jay | 10/4/07
This song seems hypnotic. It puts me in a state of mind that I can recall being in sometime in the past. Funny, though, the feeling that it conveys is a feeling of hopelessness, that I have since been freed from by an incredible hope that I will share with you shortly. It seems like Maynard is trying to accomplish something with this song other than entertainment. The meaning is so deep and so subtle yet it's so clear that this is a song written to influence people for a certain reason. Are you being influenced by it? How has it changed you? Be careful that you don't exalt Maynard above that which he really is. He is a talented musician that is for sure, but he can't save you from what plagues you most. Have you ever wondered why there are aspects of your personality that no matter how hard you try, you seem to be enslaved by them? Do you ever feel compelled to do things you know you shouldn't be doing, yet it is as if something is driving you to do them anyways? Do you lie to people? The Bible says, "You shall not bear false witness." Do you lust after people of the opposite sex? The Bible says, "You shall not commit adultery, but I say to you that any man who looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart." Do you feel passionate anger towards other people? The Bible says, "You shall not kill, and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: but I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause is in danger of the judgment...but whosoever shall say, You Fool! shall be in danger of hell fire." Do you have a constant rebellion inside towards your parents? The Bible says, "Honor your father and mother." Could you care less about God? The Bible says, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The Bible says, "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man..." Are you plagued by these unwelcomed, unwanted thoughts? Do you break promises? The Bible speaks of human nature when it says, "Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." Do you curse at people regularly? If saying to someone, "You Fool!" merits hell fire, how much more a malicious onslaught of curses? Do you have premarital sex? Do you ever stop and consider the fact that you have a Creator, and that He is absolutely holy, and that you will give an account of your life to Him? The Bible warns that God has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness, and you are plagued by things that He hates and must cast from His presense. As human beings, sin saturates us, and keeps us in bondage. We are spiritually dead, because, "The wages of sin is death." The Bible is a spiritual Book, so when it makes that kind of statement, it is usually spiritual. If you love that which causes you to be spiritually dead and separated from God, where do you think God will send you when you die? You make it clear on earth that you want to be separated from Him, when you daily make the choices to indulge in the things that your conscience warns you will seperate you from Him, yet you choose to do them anyways. Do you really think that He will grant you an eternity is His presence when you continually reject Him on earth? The Bible says that "...all liars will have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." This death is etern
al. An eternal punishment. If liars are in danger of this, how much more all the rest? "Do not be decieved: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, not adulterers, not effiminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, not drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God."
"For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet maybe for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. More more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life." Jesus Christ of Nazareth gave His perfect life as a perfect sacrifice to take the punishment for your sins and for the sins of the world. He was crucified your our sins. Because He was sinless, the law of sin and death ("The wages of sin is death") did not apply to Him. It was not possible that death could hold Him, on the third day He rose from the dead and conquered the grave. Jesus Christ is alive, and He offers you the gift of everlasting life, all He asks in return is for you to turn from your sins and obey Him as Lord, upon doing so, you will be born into the kingdom of God, and recieve the gift of everlasting life. You will be justified by God through faith in the blood of Christ, "Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God has set for to be an appeasment through faith in His blood..." "Repent, and believe the gospel..." "For what do the scriptures say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. Now to him that works is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that works not, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness." Believe the good news of the gospel, and you will recieve the gift of everlasting life, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that thr world through him might be saved. He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God... He that believes on the Son has everlasting life: and he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him." Believe Him! He will save you right now, this very instant, if you will but call out His name. He will cleanse you of your sin, and He will set you free from the bondage of it. He will save you from the wrath of God. He allowed the wrath of God to be poured out onto Him on the cross so it wouldn't be poured out onto those who believe in Him. Jesus said, "If you love me keep my commandments." So do that. Prove your love to the Son of God who suffered and died to save you by keeping His commandments. Read His word daily, the Bible, and obey it, and God will save your soul and nothing will pluck you out of His Almighty Hands. God bless you all.
Unsung(sic!) poet | Reviewer: Big John | 9/26/07
I love the work of APC and the work of Tool, and I've been spreading the word to as many friends as possible. Many have been converted to the music (and thanked me profusely after seeing just how good Tool were live at Brixton - awesome gig!!) but sadly I can't get them to read and consider the lyrics, without which it's just great music.
Maynard really deserves recognition as a poet in his own right, if the lyrics of Lateralus (and particularly Orestes) were published as a poetry anthology the academics and the luvvies would go nuts over it (and probably be totally confounded when they discovered that their new prodigy is actually one of those (ugh!) ignorant rock stars(not!)).
Has Maynard changed my life? Big time!!
Savior | Reviewer: Adrienne | 8/22/07
Orestes, and Mer De Noms, saved my life.
Maynard has saved me.
