This song is quite deep. I think it's about a girl who is afriad of love, being loved in specific, probably because she doesn't want to be put in a vunerable position. Thus she choses to believe love is a "role", not something real or genuine. But the narrator is ensuring her, he would never hurt her, he would die before he ever heart her. He just wants her to stop putting up walls, stop "chasing ghosts" or the idea that she will be better of alone.
