I like songs like this because you can wonder about them and wonder if they're true or made up, or if it has a secret meaning to the singer based on something they've experienced. you sort of can make up your own meaning to it, whatever makes sens to you. That's fun to find out why the song was made, and to think of it as a mystery.

yo, i'm only 15 but i love this track and the eagles, my mum got me into this sorta music cuz my brother and sister don't really like oldies stuff
but i think the music track is awesome
you gotta listen to the old music to appreciate the new yeah?
probably the real reason the song is a bit weird is cuz the eagles (along with everyone else) where probably high at the time, i mean we ARE talking about the late 70's here...
its kinda creepy that people interpreted this song as a mental hospital run by cannibals...
i think its a good bet to think that 'steely knives' is a stab at steely dan, cuz didn't they mention the eagles in that 'song everything you did' ??

...Jay,as far as I read, came closest to the actual meaning and purpose to the Hotel Cali lyrics. Maybe the majority of the comments to this is a younger generation, even still, the meaning of Hotel California, was never a kept secret, that I remember. It's really located on a dark desert Hwy. in California, an old mission style(home really) however she accomidated many guests ,whom 'checked in' with fame and fortune on thier agenda...not realizing that the Heaven they bargined for then, WOULD be,the last dance to remember!!! Definition of 'Wine'(short for'Spirits of Wine':- 'rectified spirit'. Def. of rectify: remedy, adjust;to make alternating current, undirectional.Hence, you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. And 'Being prisioners here(was,as it states).. done so of 'thier own device'!(Definition of device:practice or means used to achieve a dramatic effect). On the upside!... all is shifting back into balance!(Faster for those who are seeking Oneness or the I AM!) Which meanes, even the ultimate 'deal with the devil' can be undone! The knowledge I share here, is truth, these things happend. Another example of the absolute...ie.,restoring the consciousness to humanity, effeortlessly reverses the circumstances, refreshing the planet.

Here is how Wikipedia describes Hotel California. Notice that the ACTUAL BAND MEMBERS are QUOTED. So cmon guys! This is the real meaning. And stop with all your garglemesh. It's not drugs not ghosts not whore house. Just a Hotel. Listen to the song once with the lyrics in front of you. The lyrics mean what they say.
The song's lyrics describe the title establishment as a luxury resort where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave." On the surface, the song tells the tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared inviting and tempting. The song is generally understood to be an allegory about hedonism and self-destruction in the Southern California music industry of the late 1970s; Don Henley called it "our interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles"[2] and later reiterated "[i]t's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about."[3]
The abstract and metaphoric nature of the song has led listeners to their own interpretations over the years, including some claims, spread by word of mouth and internet, of Satanic aspects. Other rumors suggested that the "Hotel California" was a mental hospital, a real hotel run by cannibals, or a metaphor for cancer. These claims have been consistently refuted by the band.[4]
The term "colitas" in the first stanza of the song is a desert flower, also known as Antelope sage or Colita de Rata [5]. Both Don Henley and Don Felder have repeatedly and publicly stated that Colitas are "heady desert flowers."[citation needed] Others assert that "colitas" is a Spanish term for "little tails." This is a reference to the buds of the Cannabis plant.[6]
The use of the word "steely" in the lyric (referring to knives) was a playful nod to band Steely Dan, who had included the lyric "Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening" in their song Everything You Did, according to Glenn Frey's liner notes for The Very Best of the Eagles.

what you want it | Reviewer: Savannah | 5/26/08
I agree with a lot of you. It means whatever you want it to. I think they wrote it because they new how much speculation it would cause!maybe it means nothing at all. Anyway don't read so much into it. Its a beautiful song with beautiful instrumentals. Listen to it to just enjoy the music.
Shed Some Truth... | Reviewer: VanBarbee | 3/29/08
Hotel California, like Stairway, Bohemian, and so many other legendary songs, is one of those that has been a philosophical conundrum ever since we first heard the lyrics. I recall from my studies that Hotel California was written about the impossible dream of perfection (such as the dream of a better life in the west) and how cryptic it could be if you even came close to finding it.
The reference to colitas is indeed odd and possibly refering to drugs, but let us recall that it is simply a recreational drug, and nothing to be focused on too intently, regardless of legality. Shimmering and dim lights are simply time passing and the driver growing tired.
As for steely knives, it is just a witty lyric, and not any kind of nod at Steely Dan. Knives are made of steel in most cases...therefore steel-y is understandable, if not incredibly obvious.
Being able to check out at any time, but never being able to leave, well isn't that the case with a lot of things in life? Bad habbits, tempting offers, simply the things in life we wish we could stop, but never truly can.
And yes, it is about the music industry. Hence California (music central).
Still however, a truly amazing song, regardless of it's lyrics.
Stab them with their "Steely" knives but they just can't kill the best... | Reviewer: Lisa Johnson | 1/28/08
I read somewhere that the "Stab them with their Steely knives..." was a reference to Steely Dan. It seems one of the band member's girlfriends (may have been Don, I don't remember which) was fooling around with or had left him for, one of the members of Steely Dan. Thus, metaphorically stabbing the afflicted "Eagle" with his "Steely" knife, but couldn't kill him. Get it?
