Clearly this song is about a child's memories of their father going away to war. When he passes by in the parade perhaps it is him being carried by pall-bearer. No gleam in his eye, just standing there on his back (lying in a coffin) at the funeral. Or perhaps returning from a war after killing someone has made him cold and distressed, thus losing the gleam of life in his eye.
