I want you all to listen to 21 guns, and then listen to Boulevard of Broken Dreams. then comment back and tell me that the acoustic rifts sound almost identical. its probably why 21 Guns did so well.
:) thanks :) | Reviewer: kaitlyn | 2/11/12
This song always makes me cry. It brings back memories that I can't even remember (If that makes sense :P). I really like the message and Billie Joe Armstrong sings this song differently than any other song he's ever sang before. Thanks guys (Billie Joe, Mike and Tre), thank you for being there for me when no one else was. :)
deeper than anti-war | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/3/11
reading these lyrics, i realized something that I hadn't before: they are obviously anti-war, but deeper than that is a strong anti-Vietnam message.
"and your thoughts have taken their toll/ when your mind breaks the spirit of your soul:" many Vietnam veterans suffer from flashbacks and other such problems, and i feel that this line is referencing that.
"Did you try to live on your own/When you burned down the house and home?" in my opinion, this is referencing how US soldiers used flamethrowers and napalm strikes on villages and hamlets full of innocent women and children.
"you're in ruins:" possible just referring to the mental state of 'Nam veterans.
"when you're at the end of the road:" could this be referencing the Ho Chi Minh trail?
one of my favorite songs. again, i only saw these references after reading the lyrics here.

I just get goose bumps from this, seriously.
I am Dutch and this makes me think of all my landmates who died in WW2.
It also makes me think of my best friend, who is from Germany. Sometimes we talk about ww2 together and I realize that she cant do anything about it.
I love this song. It makes me think.
Peace is International.

lemme just say that green day has been my favorite band since i heard them and i am absolutely in love with billie joe. i'm the type of person that likes songs with hidden messages and lyrics that make you think. this is a mixture of that, a 'wake up america' song, and a heartbreak song. its not my favorite, but i love it just the same.

I've always been GD's fans since Dookie. I love both the upbeat and slow songs from them. But this song really stand out in this album. Totally love it, their best slow song so far. Really really love Billie Joe's voice here. The lyrics are beautiful. I can't wait for another great song from them. Love GD a lot!
amazing! | Reviewer: katie | 7/29/09
Who would have thought Billie Joe had such an amazing voice?! I ABSOLUTELY la-la-laaavvveeee this song. I was always into their older stuff; such as Basketcase, Good Riddance(Time Of Your Life), Minority, and was a little unsure about anything from American Idiot up until now, but after seeing them in concert earlier this month I've had a complete change of opinion! I love Green Day and I hope to see them continue dishing out amazing lyrics :)
Well.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/23/09
Im not gonna lie, I do not consider myself a real fan of Greenday, as I only like about 5 of their songs, and Im commenting here because this is one of those 5 that I like. It is a very nice song, and I enjoy listening to this, along with Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Holiday, Minority and Wake Me Up When September Ends. Oh, and I don't mind Viva La Gloria from the new album. Thats all that really needs to be said, im not, and probably never will call myself a fan, but those songs mentioned are the only really good ones in my opinion.
Great | Reviewer: Clint | 7/15/09
Man, they just keep doing it. I wasn't a fan until American Idiot came out. But now I wish I would've been from the start. They're an amazing band. And this is an amazing song. This band is legendary. Rock on Green Day. :D
they've done it again. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/2/09
Green Day was gone for five long years, but they're back. Their new album had it's rough spots with songs like Static Age, but songs like 21 Guns, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, and East Jesus Nowhere make up for it. 21 Guns is an anti-war song where Billie Joe explores the range of his voice (finally). Great, meaningful verses, and a catchy chorus. Five stars.
