interesting lyrics | Reviewer: she's breaking up with him? | 10/8/07
first impression i had was that she told him she wanted to break up, or end whatever....and he is freaking out about it. it's not as complex as the whole drinking and driving and alcoholism ideas, but i just have that feeling. it remined me of when you break up with someone and you cant believe the words came out of your mouth ... or how you have to reason with them ... ie:
"I know what you're thinking,
But darling you're not thinking straight
Sadly things just happen we can't explain."
then she continues to tell him to sleep it off, as if everything will settle down because he clearly isn't handling it well (smash).
hm. just a thoughttttt? who knows!
another interpretation | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/6/07
I think she just told him that she's pregnant and he can't handle it. "now, sleep i promise it'll all seem better somehow."
"sadly things happen we just can't explain" obviously they aren't prepared for this. But she knows that he's just being impetuous in the moment, so she's trying to calm him down.
what i think | Reviewer: whitney | 9/18/07
I originally thought they were just fighting and he was drunk and was going to go have an affair and she was trying to keep him there. I still think thats what its about but I think these reviews are very good and could be correct as well. I've been listening to the song non stop as I've just learned a dance piece from Mia Michaels to it. freaking amazing.
oh make sure you listen for the "cup kicking" right after she says "put back the car keys, or somebody's gonna get hurt"
i love the fighting in the background once the dinga stuff starts at 3:15. its very cool.
the song is very powerful and i love all the building of intensity as the song goes on.

abuse? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/2/07
It seems to me like she revealed something to him...(maybe cheating as said before) which obviously made him upset and he wanted to leave but then she wanted instant forgiveness without letting him have time to blow off the steam ( go for a drive or whatever) and so he ends up taking out his frustrations on her in an abusive manner. I think the smashing comes from items in the house. and/or the blows he's making to her.

This is about drunk driving, in my opinion.
Dont, ohh, SMASH
AND:
Just put back the car keys,
Or somebody's gonna get hurt

I like "Bella's" interpretation of the lyrics. But as much as that makes sense, the line "who are you calling at this hour?" kinda doesn't fit with her being the cheater. If he was so angry with her betrayal, the conscious choice of calling a good friend for rational advice seems like an unlikely option...or calling like an ex or something to get back at her, again doesn't seem like something a person would think of in the heat of the moment.
As for the alcoholism theory...interesting but makes even less sense. But if I'm sure about one thing, it's that she(the one narrating) is the one that did something wrong and she's confessing it, there's an emotional as well as a physical struggle, and finally a permanent loss by the end..maybe death.
I LOVE IT!! so much depth...

Actually, I think the song is about that she reveals that SHE is the one that has been cheating ("The moment I said it,The moment I opened my mouth Lead in your eye lids,Bulldozed the life out of me"). She wants them to still be together and work it out, but he has distanced himself from her and is always leaving the house before he have to face her (It's not even light out,But you've somewhere to be). She is trying to fix things, but is doesn't seem like he is interested in doing so because he is feeling betrayed. Since they're not communicating properly, his anger grows more and more till there is no turning back ("Oh, I've never seen you like this, You're scaring me").
What I think the end of this song is, is that in a heated argument he leaves the house taking the car-keys and drives away whereas she is trying to stop him since she has a feeling that someone will get hurt. She prays for him to stay and talk things over, but he doesn't listen to her. He drives off, and off course, he end up being involved in a car accident..
That's my theory :)

The lyrics are great. They're really meaningful. I think the songs about alcohalism. Someone she loves is trying to conquer it and slowly she's losing him. The smash could mean he's angry because hes drunk and hes breaking things. The car reference was just her taking the keys away from him.
