Drive as an anti-religious song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/5/10

I think this is a comment on religion as a crutch, and mass delusion, causing you to be one of the hive, due to fear of uncertainty. I think the Water over wine lyric also refers to the bible story of the miracle of Jesus turning water to wine, and the choice of water is the decision to choose reality instead of looking for miracles, to take the wheel and drive your own life, the opposite of that "jesus take the wheel" philosophy. When you do decide to live your life with open eyes, not blinded by religion, you find your light (truth, confidence, self-determination etc) and are present to face your future, driving your own course instead of just riding along where fate steers you.

a simple comment | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/17/10

Yes, there is a suspicion about religion. He says you must drive your own life but you cant always drive the way youlike. Because there is someone can ontrol your life from outside. For indtance, do you able to control the traffic accidents, the weather and so on. And our world is spinnig around for many hundreds of years and it havent crashed anywhere yet. so there is someone that controls everything.

for me, it means that even with all the uncertainties and doubts that he's feeling and even letting others influence him he will still be continuing he's life accept everything, may it be bad or good. And keep living. . .

Taking control of my life | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/4/10

I related to this song in a way that maybe most people don't. I am 52 and have had a few bad relationships because I am co-dependant and have a FEAR of being alone so I have always settled for less. To me this song represents how I feel now. I am stronger and know that I do not need a man, nor anyone else in my life to make me whole. I no longer allow the FEAR of being alone to rule my life and have now taken control and drive life myself and I relish seeing tomorrow come and I will be there with open arms to greet the day knowing I am healing and driving my own life now instead of the FEAR of being alone driving it.

water over wine | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/10/10

I took the line "would you choose water over wine?" to be that wine is an intoxication, a way of coping with reality by being under the influence. Water is pure and sober. Wine being a way to deal with the 'fear' or in this case. Maybe religion is the wine and water is independent spirituality?

It´s a matter of choosing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/5/10

This song means that you have to drive your own life. Sometimes you do it, sometimes not. The question Would you choose water over wine? is related to what things you choose or what things would like or have to use. We drive our life, or we dont drive it, but the best is to it, to take control on our things.

its life | Reviewer: Jason | 6/16/10

Its just talking about being in charge of your own life and doing what you know is right. You can be the driver or let someone else but when trouble comes tomorrow ill be there. There is a security in know that your driving rather than someone else.

Doubtful that this song is about religion or a pro religious song | Reviewer: Cody | 6/15/10

Just for the simple fact that Brandon Boyd does not believe in religion, he says in god maybe, but not religion. He said in an interview once with an art magazine that he is very suspicious of "religion, and anything mystical or occulty". That fact has been noted many times in some of his other lyrics. See "Megalomaniac", "A Crow Left Of The Murder", "A Certain Shade Of Green", "Agoraphobia", "Rogues" (especially), "When It Comes", "Out From Under", "Vitamin", "New Skin", "Idiot Box", all of those songs note Boyd's suspicion of theology and mysticism.

i believe it's about faith | Reviewer: Lois | 4/21/10

the lyrics to this song totally describe what i went through when i experienced a fear of aging and death for the first time after losing my twin brother to cancer. i prayed again for the gift of faith and received it. the panic attacks were all about fear of the unknown. once i realized that i would evolve into a gracious older woman just as i had evolved into the 35 year old woman i was, i realized that i could embrace life again, without fear, knowing that "whatever tomorrow brings, i'll be there, with open arms and open eyes. my faith allows me the freedom to "take the wheel and drive" without fear, sure that it's all part of the plan. i like the anology the one person used regarding the water over wine in relation to bland over flavorful. i am a recovering addict, so i can attribute it also to my choice of water over wine giving me the freedom to choose to drive. i had no control over my destiny when i was an active addict. today i choose "water" and i get to drive fear free.

Love this beautiful song.

pure water | Reviewer: JIC | 4/17/10

Aside from the many things he is suggesting (You should be the pilot of your own life) He could also -in some parts- be taking about stopping intoxication "choose water over wine" when we're intoxicated we have little control of ourselves "hold the wheel and drive"

Different Meanings | Reviewer: Foxy_Ninja | 4/1/10

Everyone just read this for a second, even if you are Christian; This song has many different meanings to many different people. Some people think it's racist by the meaning of water and wine, while others relate it to religion. I think he means 'Will you control your life and not let fear control everything you do. Like in the music video he is drawing awesome pictures, but he is afraid they aren't good enough so he crumples them up and throws them away. Maybe he means that you should take a chance and welcome whatever happens with open arms. Anyway thank you for reading this.

your better half | Reviewer: flipezsru@aim.com | 3/23/10

incubus has a history of mixing religion and philosophy inside all their music. you're a fool if you think he's not directly referring to passing on christian values. He's trying to promote the idea that if you aren't just "sold over" on a belief, one can actually find the truth in themself.

Perspective | Reviewer: Lionheart | 3/22/10

Notice the kind of opinions have. Christians think it's talking about Christ/sin, while those who believe in the more secular train of thought see it differently.

Music is beautiful because it's one artist's work with his/her intended message, but it may mean something completely different to someone else.

water or wine? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/17/10

There could be a few interpretaions of this song, but for those that dwell on this part:
"Would you choose water over wine?"

I think there is more to it. Jesus made water into wine. Jesus drank wine, and probably water, too.
However, water is nearly tasteless, bland, and common. whereas Wine is harvested and tended, and crafted with great care. Wine may complement many a great meal, adding flavor that mere water or food (many meats) cannot, on its own.
So perhaps, this song is about taking risks, and no matter what, "I will be there" - with open arms, etc. like a bird that must fly and leave the nest, on its own. I would choose wine over water, and have more flavour. Would you choose water, like everone else, or have wine - a richer and more varied bouquet of experience?
