Each person is born in the prison of his or her mind, and the mind is a societal construct. Every person is a socially conditioned robot, repressed and enslaved. And every person is programmed to believe that he or she can live free in a society. This idea of society, culture, and civilization as a prison is part of the message of John Lennon. In his spiritual vision we are all imprisoned by our ego-mind and its divisiveness, possessiveness, and unawareness. No vision of truth is possible with the mind. One must go beyond the mind in order to be aware of the highest state of consciousness, the innermost center of being, the nameless unknowable mystery. To be spiritually aware one must go within and personally, directly, immediately experience the beyond. Meditation is a technique to transcend the mind, and it is also the state of consciousness known as spiritual enlightenment. We each choose to be spiritually imprisoned, bound, and enslaved. We each can also choose inner freedom, the only true freedom possible. The choice for inner freedom is the only real revolution, and that choice is the greatest responsibility for every individual.
