I never grow tired of listening to all of Johnny Cashs' music - he can take any song (such as this Nine Inch Nails song) and make it his own, with such a quiet kind of power!
My favorite musician David Dondero can do that also.
Long live the artist's and musicians of our world.
A great song that will make you cry" | Reviewer: Will | 11/26/09
A++ for this song. I remember watching the video when it came out, forgetting about it, hearing the original, and just recently refinding this treasure. The song was even included on NPR's Decade in Music.
Miss you Johnny, see you in heaven soon.
beyond great | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/22/08
this song say's so much in nothing but small words, but to understand it see the video for this it's incredible i love this song, i don't care about who's the best and who ain't it's just how you feel about it.
just a thought... | Reviewer: joe | 11/22/07
I think what makes this version so powerful is that this is the older and wiser Johnny looking back at his life. This is Johnny Cash's "My Way" if you will. It's s reality check on one hand, but also a self-reflection and he comes to terms with the way he chose to live his life.
wow!! | Reviewer: lazarus | 10/21/07
I,as well as other people, could relate to this song. Both Johnny Cash and Trent Reznor are superb artists and they make this song come alive when one hears it.
Why Compare? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/28/07
Comparing Johnny Cash and NIN versions of this song is ridiculous. Both artists are in completely different genres, as is the song. I say respect both.
A Classic | Reviewer: Flagg | 9/18/07
For me, this song is not just a stand-alone song, it is the final track on NIN's album The Downward Spiral. I think the best way to listen to it is by listening to the entire album and then you hear Hurt at the end, and it's the perfect song - in that context. That's why I'll always like the original better, although Cash's version is good too.

I want to know
who wrote the song
to begin with
i think NIN sounds better
but thats my opinion..
credit | Reviewer: Adam | 9/6/07
credit should go to trent for writing the song and NIN did perform it well but johnny cash's version just has more meaning and the fact that it describes his life so well.

This song is very straight and dynamic-less in cash's version. Cash never could have interpreted the meaning of this song as well as Trent. He didn't write the song, and he didn't add any more significance to this song than a fourteen year old girl in the shower. Trent deserves all of the credit for the depth of this song. He wrote the lyrics, the melody, and he's not afraid to say the word "shit". Any person who degrades the NIN version of this song degrades the song itself. It is what Trent made it, and any depth found in Cash's version comes straight from the profound thought of Trent Reznor.
