He even goes as far as to steal. The tiger in the song simply implies the danger of his situation; to "ride a tiger" is an absurd and reckless thing to do. He knows it's wrong (sees the stripes) but does not recognize or care about the risk of getting his reputation or soul dirty. When he steals "diamonds" he is pursued (by the victim or by the "cat" seen punishing the priest on the album cover is your decision). After escaping he preforms his morning ceremonies, hiding his guilt by remaining in the open (the sun), but his evil puts him out of the good graces of god (the light). He realizes that what he is doing is wicked (between the velvet lies, there's a truth that's hard as steel). He realizes that while stealing gives him a thrill (feel it's heart) it's is a wicked thing (you know he's mean) and that his spirit has fallen out of the graces of god (some light can never be seen).
