It describes Iceland and its settlement in the 9th century. Vikings sailed from Norway and other parts of Scandinavia and originally settled in the western part of the country (where Reykjavik is now) following what they considered to be the guidance of the Nordic gods. The last verse tells of how they built a new society in Iceland after loosing their belongings in Norway. In order to build trust and preserve the peace they established the Althing in 930, the world’s oldest parliament.
