I'M LISTENING TO THE SONG RIGHT NOW AND I HAVE LISTENED TO IT OVER 50 TIMES SINCE I GOT THE CD AND IT'S JUST A VERY OUTSTANDING SONG TO ME AS A GURL WE ALL GO THROUGH EMOTIONAL THINGS AND I THINK THIS WAS CREATED TO SHOW OTHER GURLS THAT THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE BEEN HEART BROKEN AND THATS WHY I LOVE THIS SONG~!~

This song is played when I can't find the words to describe the grief of my heart or the low of my hope. It almost sounds like her soul is crying...its humanizes this "celebrity" "icon". Simply it says pain is pain for all of us.
the true song of a broken heart | Reviewer: marquise | 2/18/07
I think this song is for all the people who are in this position who literally feel like and do everything that Mariah sings such as try to be nonchalant every person in a bad relationship tries to feel nonchalant about their feelings and it seems like Mariah is talking directly to that person and her voice on this song really makes a person really wanna "breakdown".

The everlasting ballad | Reviewer: Temptation's Girl | 8/20/05
"Breakdown" is, I believe, the TRUE ingenious gem of Mariah's album "Butterfly". Though it didn't serve as another #1 hit for the lady, it still is one of those songs that *rightfully* didn't go mainstream. Because it deserves the kind of "cult- hit" status it got from listeners all over.
The desperation of the track really hits home somewhere inside of you, not to mention the bone- chilling melodies and depth, the strength and weakness of Mariah's voice (as she doubles it in a high falsetto and a low baritone during one of the escalating choruses), it reminds you of something you have never experienced yet but will always be there. It's so unique in itself that you don't get tired of the song --- you have to listen to it from time-to-time, every year, every time you get your heart broen or every time you need something to take your mind off of things.
And the MTV was great too, to boot. One of her best MTVs ever, IMO.
