first id like to say to nick.
cedric DOES NOT speak a womans thoughts.
though women are more likely to express emotion in such a way i have no doubt many men have such thoughts.
secondly dont start telling people they have it all wrong and your answer is right unless you met the mars volta, asked them the meaning behind this song and they gave you that answer.
there is no 1 true answer to the audience, only to the composer. a good composer will allow listeners to have there own view and ofcourse depending on what weighs on peoples emotions most this song is likely to bring it to the surface.

i myself agree with They Call me Skillz. However.
Herion is actually one of the least dangerous drugs in terms of its effects on the body, it is essentially a pain killer.
the "problem" occurs when the addict can no longer get the drug. this is where prohabition is the problem.
also what he said about junkies being "Changed forever" is complete bullshit.
i have known many that have withdrawn from it, cleaned up and gone on to lead completely normal lives as organised and together people.

Definitely about... | Reviewer: They Call Me Skillz | 11/28/07

This song is for sure about being a heroin junky.

He describes himself as in two different people.

The first description is him when he is not high on heroin...

He has fasting black lungs made of clove splintered shards... black and clove splintered shards references to heroin. His lungs would be in shards as would the rest of his body after repeated heroin usage.

When he is high he hears him every night in every pore (I think of something penetrating the pores of skin such as a needle on a syringe full of heroin) and every time he makes me feel warm (most heroin addicts tell the the feeling that heroin gives you is a complete warming of the body an absolute calmness, freeze without an answer (once you are high you are out!) free from all the shame must I hide (heroin addicts tend to be secretive with their addiction because it an overwhelming feeling of guilt hits you when you do the most dirtiest drug out there.) cause I never never sleep alone (this is when the combination of both the strung out and sober character together as one is asleep from the drug and the other is just asleep for sleep's sake).

Isle of open sores= track marks on the arms or where ever he injects it

Every time you freeze without and answer free from all the shame... that seems like what the feeling might be after each injection.

This song is a sad song to me. I have known some heroin addicts and the stuff transforms that person forever. Heroin overstimulates that brain to the point that neural connections can never be fixed and that is why recovering heroin addicts seem like empty shells of what they used to be. They really are.

Good song... very sad.

the widow | Reviewer: shay | 11/20/07

no matter how you break this down, it's one of the best songs ever penned, song, or delivered. that's why it's soo great.. and these guys do it often as if it's easy. it's amazing to me

you all have it wrong | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/15/07

"The Widow" is yet again another song from the Mars Volta about a person suffering from a mental imbalance. "i hear him every nite" Obviously someone suffering from schitzophrenia or something similar to that. They cannot sleep alone because it is at these times when these symptoms arise most frequently. Scaring the person.

i would know... my boyfriend suffers from something similar to this.

i find deep comfort in the song and so does he. amazing song. simply amazing.

About the Mars Volta | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/4/07

They've been one of my favorite bands for a few years now. All of their works are great, period. They were formerly members of At the Drive-in. For the people who didn't know, an interesting fact is that the twosome have continuously worked, jammed, and written music with John Frusciante and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is just awesome that these truely talented musicians can get together and perform music together and have an appreciation towards each other. Regardless of the level of popularity these bands have reached in recent years, i still think their greatness is underrated. More people should love their music, because the music has a meaning and message, and those people are today's true musicians and artists.

The Widow review | Reviewer: Nick | 3/27/07

I love this song, by the way. and Mars Volta. The Lead singer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, is a man, but he speaks a woman's thoughts in this song
