Good song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/24/09
Im a fairy big fan of TMV. As a bass player I honestly don't pay much attention to lyrics which is why don't mind Cedric's bat shit insane lyrics. You guys can try to make sense of them, but not sure if there is any. If there is a meaning, it means he's being pretentious just for the sake of being so. Which annoys me to no end! haha. After saying this, I love this song and the band a lot. One of my favorite bands. Thank god I don't listen to lyrics though. My roommate primarily listens to lyrics so he's not a huge fan of the band. He likes the music and the melodies he sings, but the lyrics stop him from liking them a lot.
roulette dares | Reviewer: brendan | 3/5/09
ok well i tried to interpret this song (havent read the story yet):
the haunt of roulette dares is probably what occurs after cedrics friend gambles(like in roulette) with the drugs hed taken. "caveat emptor" latin for "buyer beware" to all that partake on this journey.
the beginning of the first verse is like a scene in a hospital where cerpin is in a semi-conscious state. "in the wounded of its skin" probably refers to the wounds made by injecting morphene, the doctors will "pinprick (or annoy) the witness in ritual contrition." the doctors will judge cedric, the witness and friend, who is in ritual contrition or feeling remorse; he feels some guilt for cerpin entering this state.
"the a.m. trinity fell upon asphyxia-derailed." this line refers to the metaphorical railroads as seen later in the song. i think a.m. trinity refers to the time of 3 a.m. cause trinity is a triad or combination of 1 and 1 and 1. at about this time cerpins asphyxia (decrease in oxygen received) is derailed, meaning that he has slipped fully into his coma and is no longer feeling the breathing pains he had felt in a semi-conscious state.
so now that the train has run off the tracks, cerpin, who was definitely a passenger(his physical state), is no longer aware of his surroundings and has entered this coma of nightmares. the next part of the verse cerpin's coma form "Made its way through the tracks...half mast commute through umbilical blisters." so hes wandering ("spectre will lurk") the tracks without a train which has been derailed. im not sure what to think of "Radar has gathered
Midnight nooses from boxcar cadavers " except to see this line as indication of attempted suicide. cadaver is a corpse and boxcar is part of a train. so detected by his radar, in his nightmare, must be cerpins physical corpse, which has fallen off the tracks along with the train.
the chorus: "Exoskeletal junction at the railroad delayed." i got most my ideas about the song from the chorus considering the chorus of a song tends to sum up or support the main idea. basically i figured that the "exoskeletal (having to do with outside of a body) junction" is the real, physical world of cerpin taxt which has been "delayed" because the metaphorical train in the physical world fell off the railroad(cerpin's coma).
i won't attempt to interpret much further cause this is already long as shit but on these last few lines:
Hinges splintering inside
Bludgeoned to a saddle
Rang the cloister bell inside
they just sum up cerpins physical state of oblivion. hinges splintering inside probably refers to his cranial functions getting all out of whack, distorting his thoughts. hes bludgeoned or beat to a saddle (the bed he will lie in for a week), riding through his adventurous nightmares that will eventually lead to his death.
They made a book, too. | Reviewer: <H-B> | 2/21/09
There's no hidden meaning in this song; it's a concept album, and it is meant to be taken quasi-literally as a part of the actual narrative of the story. The Mars Volta also published a short novel based on this album, too, and it can be found easily on google.
excuse me? | Reviewer: Catie | 2/19/09
I agree, this is an AMAZING song... instrumentally and vocally. However, the lyrics are just... all over the place. Perhaps I'm overlooking some hidden meaning? Please do explain because I usually can pick up something from any song and I just don't get this one.... anyone?
the meaning... | Reviewer: SmrGuy10@AIM.com | 1/7/09
i think this song is either the man going going crazy or the actual suicide...
i just know that is what the entire album is a tale of. This song is how a came to a liking of TMV. They play it amazingly in concert even thou it is mixed in with song other songs...i highly recommend to see them
meaning? | Reviewer: lord_Iris | 12/22/08
the band is amazing... the instrumentation and synth effects are well used... thats all well and true... but what about the meaning of the song... i cant get any ideas from the lyrics... it looks like hes just picked random words out of a dictionary... but i know theres a meaning... any ideas??

amazing, i love it, my favorite song
p.s. fevian, ive seen it both ways, windows media player classifies this song under "this is the haunt" unless there are differant variations, it can pretty much go both ways
Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) | Reviewer: Fevian | 12/30/07
It's not "This is the Haunt", it's "The Haunt of."
Anyways, this song is simply amazing. Instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically, one of TMV's best songs. Really made me see how awesome of a band they are.
Way ahead of its time. | Reviewer: Ashley | 10/27/07
This song falls into the small category of "universal" for me. Meaning its significance spans time. It's completely ahead of its time and personifies musical exploration.
Really good, song... no,... Amazing song!!! | Reviewer: Albert | 8/9/07
I think this is one of the best song of the Mars Volta (classic :P),the 16 seconds of the begining, then an explosion of sounds, in some parts Cedric´s voice is mixed with tha lira,... and tha bass almost at the end is pretty nice, giving the song a "Jazz" taste,... I love the lyric, this was the first song I heared of The Mars Volta...
