i can't believe nobody has picked up on the fact this song is about the american alcoholic writer/poet Charles Bukowski. Read Ham on Rye and it will make sense that this song really isn't THAT directly about religion. and yes, great banjo part!

Do you go around to lyrics just to preach your religion? Well not ALL religious people are "Morons" but you sure are. Haha, and I'm sure if earth was "Under the domain of Satan", things would be shittier.
The fact of the matter is, whatever religion you may be, is solely based off of where and when you were born. As Dawkings said "If you were born in India, you'd be a Hindu. If you were brought up in Denmark in the time of the Vikings, you would be believing in Wotan and Thor. If you were born in classical Greece, you'd be believing in Zeus. If you were born in central Africa you would be believing in the Great JuJu up the mountain."
So do leave your religious non-sense up your ass, where it should stay.
we just DON'T KNOW | Reviewer: gonzo | 9/18/09
discussions over whether god is good, or bad, or dead, are the some of the most pointless discussions there could be. Why? Because we DON'T KNOW. No one of us. The human suit doesn't seem to come with that feature. So, it's right the guy that says he's bad, and the one that says he's good, and the guy that doesn't believe he exists. It's all truth because nothing is true at all. Don't forget truth is a word and concept created by the human mind.
AWESOME!!!!!!! | Reviewer: Charade_ur | 9/3/09
This song is great, love the very interesting use of the Banjo. I also love the land and disease line, very cool. Seems like a very artistic way to express one's negative feelings toward the idea of God, but in a way that isn't really all that offensive. The entire thing is more of a question than a disagreement. This is an A plus in my book. Not to mention Modest Mouse kicks ass.

Generalizing "religious" people as morons? You don't exactly sound so intelligent yourself, man. God doesn't "direct" anything about this world. If a man walks up to you and shoots you, would that man be justified in turning around and saying "See? I just killed him, and therefore either there is no God or God is evil!"
That's a load of crap. God doesn't make us do any of the evil things we choose to do. He does NOT control disease. He allows it to exist, sure, but it's not as if he's up there choosing who he wants go get sick next. The earth is under the domain of Satan, you must remember that. God makes us live here for a while to see if we can go through all this crap and still remain faithful to him. Only then are we allowed to spend eternity with him. You sound so amazingly ignorant when you say he doesn't want more company in heaven. He wants more than anything for us to go to heaven and be with him, but would it be right if we got into heaven after refusing to believe in the God who created us? After doing all the evil things we do and never repenting? God forgives sin, but he does not let it go unpunished, and he does not let us come live with him if we refuse to accept him as Lord.

Calling religious people 'morons' is a massive generalisation.Im not religious myself but it really pisses me off when people blame god for every single crappy thing that happens. Whereas if something great comes along, of course god has nothing to do with it. Also, like Drew said, people are way too immersed in how 'bad' their life is.
Look around, there's a lot worse.
Huge fan of modest mouse, but as to this particular song - get over yourself
Disagreement with Jesse | Reviewer: Drew | 7/2/09
Saying all religious people are morons is like saying all Modest Mouse listeners can't spell or present an argument to save their lives. It's just not true (although it is true in some cases).
My thoughts on the song - it's about someone who just is disillusioned with how badly their life is going.

this song is obviously about the way morons follow a false god. religion is waste. I LOVE how he points out "If god controls the land, disease". Think about it, why would God want to be a director of this huge movie of life KILLING babies and children with disease? what did they do? he certainly doesn't want more company in "heaven" i'll tell you that.
It captures a somewhat hazardous yet universal emotion with the right tone. | Reviewer: Kurtis Repstock | 11/13/07
Bukowski's lyricism and sound is able to capture the feeling of angst and resentment in our thoughts when we consciously pursue what we sort of perceive as a meager, superficial desire. The feeling of longing for something we don't truly want as it may poison the soul. He (Brock) has a aggitated tone in his voice, and the musicality mirrors that feeling as well. I see it less as a song to listen to when your genuinely angry but more so when you feel cool enough with yourself in constructively judging the pettiness of being angered over potentially nonsensical things like trivial trouble at work, social constructs, materialism and the pursuit of money, etc. The song has that kind of emotion/idea/feeling to it.
