i thought it was more like the singers cousin maybe. she was in an abusive relationship and she went to him about it... fueling the lyrics and the inspiration for the next song he wrote. its a pretty amazing song mostly because of the ways you can interpret it...
on abuse and those affected | Reviewer: Alisa | 3/19/09
i like this song. it shows up in my mind as from many different povs on abuse, seperated by the chourus which comes from each subsequential person. the first part part from the boy, the womans son, hideing in his room. the second part talks about a hospital visit, and the nurse's pov in the corus this time. the part "fathers a name you havent earned yet" is probably the little boy., fed up with the violence. probably now about 13. you can guess how an abusive man would react to that. he hits the boy. the final part, the woman grabs a gun, determined to defend not only herself, but now, her son. she put up with when he hit her, but her child? hell no. the chorus finally winds up with what sadly ends up happening alot when vioence is used to end abuse. the woman is taken away for murder, away from the son she defended. the "shes just a woman" part, now comes from the police on scene, upset about the murder.
atleast in my mind. it seems to fit. abuse hurts everyone involved, even if you arnt the one hit. there just doesnt seem to be a happy ending when it comes to abuse. no knight in shining armor. just more pain and sadness.
