The wife doesn't die in the crash, not that I saw. From what I watched, he's dead, and she reads about it. He's confused as to why she's upset (You know he's dead because he doesn't leave any footprints when he walks out of the milk, and she pays him absolutely no mind.) Outside, she drives off, upset, and apparently not wanting to be in the same building as her dead boyfriend/husband. Again, he's shown to be dead because even though he's following behind her, she can't see him in the rear-view mirror. The truck hits her, and she walks out, alive, I think, He saved her. Otherwise, She would have turned around when he hugged her, or would have made more than a "I feel better" look when he gave her the hug. He's saying it's never too late to save someone, regardless of what happens.
