My Take on It | Reviewer: Carl | 11/10/09
I reckon the first verse is about organised religion, '...Standing in line, faithing and hoping to buy themselves time...', He (the writer) only 'owns his mind'; not his brain; his mind, him, who and what he is...he's not condemning organised religion, just hypocrites.
I actually like the first line of the second verse, North and South are opposites, clocks and time are opposites, time, really, has little to do with our way of tracking it (clocks); we don't even know what time IS. East and West are perpendicular to North and South, sideways, left and right of time and keeping time, broader than clocks and time, other things...’The in between is mine’, you're in charge, opposite of 'predestination'...
Third verse, about growing up, losing innocence...
Fourth verse, recognise and meet your sorrows, don't let them build....
Fifth verse, don't we 'forget' the meaning of life as we go on our way? We’re all significant behind the eyes...
Sixth verse, and now we've lost innocence, we MAY need to hide, 'cause maybe we've done something wrong?
Seventh verse, recognising we are all different, no need to hide, recognise and address your faults (sins?)...

uhmm..
be your self. yeah your self.
what you are. not what they are.
when u search everywhere....
u think u can understand ...
who u are, what u are, where u are.
its none..waisting time.
focus.. just be your self.
i guess when eddie wrote this song.
he lost his self.
looking from alcohol, or talk to each other.
but in the end....
it just him self.
and he show to us, how greatfull to be him self.
its synonim of : " Man do what man want to do"
^_^
how bout yours opinion?
Significant Behind the Eyes | Reviewer: BottomlessBoundaryless | 3/18/08
This song has been written by a survivor.I listen to this song when i need some strength myself. There is actually no need to hide.Whatever one has been through.I ll just say get out of that dark corner where you ve been hidin from the world comfortably. When we all start doing so there would be no need to hide. Then everything will be safe and protected. There would be no need to look behind the eyes n find out there s a story

My interpretation of the line “the north is to south what the clock is to time” is a statement expressing humanity’s perception of reality; without south how can north exist? In the same vein without clocks how do we know time passes? And hence this line imposes upon the listener and forces them to re-evaluate what we perceive to be ‘real’. Great song either way, and Eddie Vedder is a genius.
Interesting Lyrics | Reviewer: Derek | 2/10/07
Excellent lyrics. Why impose your beliefs or ideas on any human being? Maybe, it's a felling to fit in. But when we hide are we really hiding something, or are we hiding our own insecurities? Or maybe hiding another individuals insecurities? Live your life the way you want, with what you understand. I will say this, I have a problem with one line and it's "North is to south what clock is to time". North and south are clearly defined (or are they if you study electromagnetics), yet clocks and time are not defined in this manner. Clocks and time depend on relative motion and speed. Still, great lyrics with this simple omission. "The sorrow grows bigger when the sorrow is denied..... HMMMMMMMMMM.......... "Oh yes moment here".......... So, I guess the final question is what the heck do we really know? Outside of "I AM MINE"......
