The Reviews about How To Disappear Completely (page 1/ 6)

How to write a beautiful song | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/6/10

This song is about the disastrous Glastonbury performance, where it just didn't stop raining - hence blown speakers, hurricanes etc. - think it was 1997 or 8? Might have to correct me, but it was definitely pre2000. Nevertheless a beautiful song, love the bit at the end where the strings just go into chaos, I just think the whole song is perfect.

To me the lyrics are secondary in this song. The part that really sets this song apart is the clashing strings at the end. It feels like a massive buildup of tension coming to a head until it washes away just as it becomes unbearable.

deeper meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/14/09

i think everyone has the traumatic part right, but i figured a deeper meaning in some of the lyrics. "strobe lights and blown speakers" is referring to what thom is dealing with through his own difficult experience. where as, "fireworks and hurricanes" (fireworks i think being a metaphor for weapons being used in a wartime situation) as describing what others may be dealing with in their own traumatic situation. very insightful and intelligent lyrics if you ask me.

I Think this song is an abstract of a tragic situation which you did not want to be part of and wish you could just disappear... And imagine your soul to just fly away from there through the walls and float down the liffey... I connect to the song this way, when a tragedy happens to anyone you go through moments where you wish you could just escape from there..... Brilliant lyrics... I heard the song for the first time three months a ago when a very close friend of mine passed away when we were on a holiday.... What followed is beyond explanation..... It instantly blew me apart.....

he wrote it on the dreaded OK computer tour in 1998, were thom ended in a near-breakdown situation. in the start you see him in a hotel room walking around and ind the ned he wrote "Im not here, this isent happening" on the window. i've heard too that its something Michael Stipe adviced him to do when this sudden fame became to much for him. after knowing that i think its about denial, he denies he is here. a way to cope with all of your hard times. in my oppinion the most beautiful song ever written.

beautiful song | Reviewer: justin | 12/7/09

Thom has said this song was inspired by advice Michael Stipe of R.E.M. gave him on how to cope with the pressure of tours and life on the road and such, this makes you wonder if this song is about denial, in order to calm oneself

Meaning | Reviewer: Joe | 10/31/09

The lyrics to this song definitely mean something, even if it is not evident on the surface; they don't have to slap you over the head with the answer every time, do they? Personally, I think that it is influenced by their youth at Abingdon School where Thom was the kid with the lazy eye who was bullied and got beat up.

maybe it's just the opposite--maybe it means all the analogies are right. i think people connect profoundly with Radiohead's lyrics for all kinds of different reasons--all of which make sense. this is what makes them poetry. they really come from the center or the heart--they speak for a lot of different experiences.

dissociation | Reviewer: joanne | 10/18/09

my interpretation of this song is the state of denial a person goes through when they are going through a traumatic experience, especially if it is a childhood trauma such as sexual abuse, there is an actual disorder called dissociation. this is how i relate to the song, it may not have been the purpose but it is my own interpretation.

Seriously | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/24/09

It's impossible to get this definition wrong, as evidenced by the other comments.

I agree with the comment about Colin Greenwood's bass in this song, though. It adds a LOT to the song, once you notice it's there.
