existential vacuum put to music | Reviewer: brian murphy | 8/10/07

I just bought some Beyer dynamic studio headphones, and have been testing them on various tunes in my collection. I decided to try "Like Spinning Plates" and it is just amazing.

When Amnesiac came out, it struck me as a logical conclusion to what started with OK Computer as a trip down the tail end of existential hopelessness. OK Computer shows man with an utter inability to cope with modern life, but still noticeably part of it. With Kid A, what had been wrong has continued to go awry, and man has crossed a point of no return -- into abstraction.

This process has never been more brilliantly brought to its extreme end, in music I have heard, than by Radiohead in Amnesiac. Amnesiac is the auditory diary of man utterly lost, and "Like Spinning PLates" may as well be the iconic sound of a man floating numb in the abyss.

It could accompany the astronaut in 2001 Space Odyssey floating irretrievably in the vacuum of space. It could have accompanied the final scene for Mark Wahlberg in "Perfect Storm" when he is floating on the hurricane waves in the engulfing sea, etc.

I have to think hard of another song that does this state of mind justice, and the only one that comes to mind is "nobody home" by Pink Floyd / Roger Waters.

But, in Radiohead the words seem incidental. In fact, I had thought the words were gibberish up to "and this just feels like...", and the words above match the music perfectly.

This song would also be perfect for someone who is broken and lost -- such as Michael Jackson in Never Land, or Howard Hughes shut in the hotel suite.

The song is definitely a sonic masterpiece, and I wonder why it has not received more attention as such.

I think the studio version of this song is beter than the live version...not because the live is bad, 'cause its amazing, i dont know why but..i prefer the studio version

Radiohead | Reviewer: Matt | 6/17/07

This song is marvelous! You can really feel the emotion.
Radiohead are in my opinion (Genius!)
It is almost like a classical music type of piece. In saying that, all their songs generally do sound classical/jazz/rock influenced!

Check out Christopher O' Riley! A classical composer! He translates about 30 of radiohead's songs onto piano!

Now what an earth would inspire a classical composer to translate some rock bands music?

That in itself, is proof of radiohead's genius!

play it backwards! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/3/07

has anybody else noticed that if you play the track backwards its almost exactly the same as I Will? seeing as thom wrote like spinning plates based on the I Will backing track played backwards. listen to it backwards! its creepy....especially if you have heard I Will!

Unfathomable | Reviewer: Kurt | 5/12/07

I can't fathom this song. Many simply disgard this song as experimentation and go for the other tracks on Amnesiac such as Pyramid Song and You and Whoe's Army. Both are brilliant yes, especially the former, but nothing in the entire history of music can match the sheer torment and angish of this song! And I would have to absolutly agree with the preceeding coment about the technical brillaince in making this opus! Those who think I'm going way overboard, just think, have you heard of anything under four minutes long that was able to reduce you to tears? I certianly haven't and never will!

I'me affraid I havn't heard the live version, but I would still have to agree with Michael, the recorded version is utterly devistating. Even more so when you understand the sheer technical brilliance of Radiohead in making this track. The backround track runs in a loop and is then reversed several times to produce the awsom swiving effect. Thom even plays his own voclals backwards several revolutions while finally singing normaly over the top!

they said i needed a title | Reviewer: Eric | 5/7/07

I have to agree with those that say the live version is better - the sheer tragic beauty of the piano accentuates the clear and biting lyrics. The rift is wide, but Yorke spans it in rare form.

a disagreement | Reviewer: Michael O'Connell | 4/30/07

I think the album version is much better than the live version. It seems to me that the general frustration exhibited by the music and lyrics of Amnesiac is best conveyed by the instruments, effects, and manipulated vocal style of the album version.

Pas mal | Reviewer: Mal a la tete | 4/28/07

Music is amazing even if the lyrics are a bit clumsy. I think this song hits the mark.

I have to agree with both of you..The live version is much better.
I do love both the versions though.
But the piano on the live version is just so amazing. I can play it =]
But yeah..One of my favourite Radiohead songs ever.
