the song is a short tale about the manager of the lamb inn paul mccarthy who was friends with thom towards the end of thoms study,s.paul has contributed more than you may think to thom and radiohead,in 2012 pauls book ..WHO,S THE VILLAIN..will be on the shelves..you think you know radiohead..this book will wipe the smile off many faces..
Lord of the Flies | Reviewer: Joy | 5/20/11
I'm sorry, even though sing song 'apparently' has nothing to with anything, I can't help but notice a tonne of references to 'Lord of the Flies'.... For example:
At the start it says "where do we go from here" and "alone on an aeroplane, falling asleep against the window pane". In 'lord of the Flies' they come into the novel on a plane and crash.
"wash myself again to hide the dirt and the pain". In the novel Ralph is constantly going on about being clean and civil. " 'cause I'll be scared there's nothing underneath" obviously commenting on loosing civilisation. By remaining clean you remain civilised.
"but who are my real friends" clearly savagery. Cannot trust people. Constantly fighting. At the end of the novel Ralph realises that Piggy is a true friend.... "have they all got the bends" I.e., have they gone savage?...
"am I sinking this low". At a few places in the novel Ralph notices that he joins in the savagery; basically sinking 'that low'
"we don't have any real friends". We're savage and fight against our fears, ourselves and our 'friends'
"I wish it was the sixties". The novel became popular at this time and also is set at a similar time.
"the planet is a gunboat in a sea of fear". The island in the novel Is 'boat shaped' and one of the main themes of the novel is fear. The boys are on a journey in a 'sea of fear'.
"...and the whole marines, to blow me away, to blow me sky high". The boys in the island are rescued by the navy, and only on the arrival of the naval officer did the boys realise what they had been doing. They realised who their friends were and that they had lost innocence. Basically, they were 'blown sky high' by the arrival of the naval officer.
"I wanna be part of the human race". Nobody wants to be savage, so therefore want to be part of the human race. They can only want to be part of the human race - you cannot become part of the human race. We are all savage at heart.
Finally, "where are you now when I need you?". This is the question you are meant to ask at the end of the novel: "who will save the adults? Who will save us from descending into savagery? Who will stop us from fighting?"
...but anyway, that's what I think, I personally believe this is based on 'Lord of the Flies'. you need to read the novel to understand.

"It's incredibly annoying that no one's noticed the giggles in that album. The song 'The Bends' is completely jokey, completely taking the piss. None of that stuff had ever happened to us when we wrote it. That was our Bowie pastiche, our joke song ! And I really do wish I'd never written that fucking song - it's become the bane of my life. Hundreds of journalists asking - every single fucking interview : "Do you wish it was the sixties ?" No, I don't wish it was the fucking sixties - Levis jeans wish it was the sixties - I certainly fucking don't."
Doesn't mean its not one of the best alternative rock songs ever written, but interesting thats how it came about!
so judgemental... | Reviewer: KTS | 12/1/09

the bends | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/14/09
I agree with every one down here the bends is the best album thanks to the "creep period" and yes even though I like all radiohead albums I like this one best because I like every song and there all original and unique second best to this album is hail to the thief
Re: Amazing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/13/09
Bends is my favorite album also. Of all their albums there are the most "rock and roll" type songs, and by that i mean melodic guitar riffs. There are so many songs they have they i relate to on a personal level at different times in my life, which is truly the sign of great art.
amazing. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/6/08
the bends is just a fantastic album. a lot of people claim that 'ok computer' is the best radiohead album -
it's the bends, no doubt about it.
there is not one filler on this album, they are all fucking amazing tracks. if you don't have if - buy it.
A well done rock song | Reviewer: Donald | 4/22/08
Most bands will have fans claiming that at one point in life or another a certain album was like the 'soundtrack' to their personal grief or joy. Radiohead, to me, has always inhabited a certain vein of experience. The lines from this song--
"Just lying in a bar with my drip feed on
talking to my girlfriend waiting for something to happen
I wish it was the sixties
I wish I could be happy
I wish, I wish, I wish that something would happen."
-- seem to be the bends album's account of that kind of disconnection from the world. I think the reason I've been listening to this song so much lately is that the other night I was out with a girl and we are both the introverted type that can talk to one another but we don't really go about meeting a group of friends or fit in well with a clique. She said 'This is so boring, nobody is doing anything we just come out and drink!" And I just thought of those lines and laughed. I suppose that means she is my girlfriend. I guess that means I have a girlfriend. Fuck.
