Completely unaware of everything. | Reviewer: [r!ddlebox] | 6/22/10
I agree with you zumer.
Some dumbass with a bible always has to ruin something good for everyone who doesnt exactly know the truth.
Maybe, just maybe one day society will learn its true meaning.
Peace with you all.
just my thoughts | Reviewer: zumer7 | 6/8/10
first of all, to hope reviewer, get your religious bullshit off of this site, Maynard is an athist, and you just fucked up a lot of people on the meaning of this song. If you are so fucking religious, burn all of your tool albums, and go to fucking church and thump the fucking bible you dumb son of a bitch.
Secondly, This song is like any other tool song, Maynard writes vaguely so that fans like us may derive our own meaning from it. If it means anal fisting to you, more power for you. If you picked a more lets say not so disturbing way of interpretation, then you have done exactly what Tools goal is.
I love tool, and I am waiting the next album.

I fucking love this song! My favorite song of all of them but I agree with Izzy it makes a shit load of sense. In case you didn't catch it. It reads,
"My personal interpretation | Reviewer: Izzy | 1/6/10
To me, this song is about becoming numb. It's got nothing to do with anal fisting, this is simply the metaphor that Maynard chose to convey his message. When you fist, you widen the whole, so using something regular sized, like a penis, won't be enough anymore; every time you'll need more and more to feel, hence the finger < knuckle < elbow < shoulder transition, it's just a vicious cycle of numbing oneself in the search to feel something.
"I don't want it, I just need it" - This shows the human need to feel, because nothing is worse than being numb, be it physically or emotionally.
This song is amazing, the lyrics are perfect, and it's one of the reasons I love Tool."
Congratulations.. and who is the gay guy that says the song is just about fisting and the rest is bullshit.. and he says he knows.. cause he fist and likes getting fisted? First off..THAT'S FUCKED! Secondly, What you do at home is your own prerogative but that shits pretty sick. All I am saying is think outside the "fisting gay box."
Just my opinion... | Reviewer: TROY | 4/15/10
its easy... its about overstimulation, and fisting is the metaphor of choice. I guess once you are fisted so many times you just go numb and cant feel much unless your being fisted. Tool does have a sarcastic and silly way to going about their diction, but they also remain just vague enough for all the emo fans to make some deep emotional meaning from it and turn into one more think to smudge their black make-up.

I know exactly what this song is about. You probably do also.
Ephesians 4:19 (New International Version)
Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.
And
Romans 1:24-28 (New International Version)
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.
However there is still hope:
John 6:37 (New International Version)
All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

I rofl'd at Ed's review.
I think it's all about getting numb due to constant stimulation, as said, nothing seems to satisfy. MJK just usually chooses the most radical/dirty metaphors to get his message through. Seen many times!
punchline | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/17/10
the song is about fisting the rest is bs tool is awesome but the even called it a joke band in an interview some of it just brushes against contraversially matters which are by opinion serious to some people within the context of their situation....... even rape can be funny did you ever see evil dead?
deep shitty fisting and a search for meaning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/15/10
Ok, I haven't trawled through the pages of old responses, but my skim-read has revealed a lot of overthinking; This song, start to finish is about anal fisting AND, whether intentional or not, it does make a beautiful metaphor for the ongoing search for stimulus and meaning in life.
This is coming from someone (me, 25yo gay guy)who fists and gets fisted. It's all real. Elbow, shoulder, the lot. if you don't beleive me try googling ffucking ffantastic. You'll see.
And BTW in the context of Tool's other songs I would define them as not 'gay' as that is too narrow and caries its own connotations. Omnisexual would be in the right direction, but it doesn't quite convey what raunchy perverts they are/were.
And sorry if it shocks you, but the 'stink' part isn't just refering to the fact that you fist an anus. Lots of guys are into deep shitty fisting. Still don't believe me?- google manscat and scatboi. Cheers prudes.

I have to say, this song is definitely one of the major feats accomplished by Tool and has an incredible video to go along with it (like many Tool songs). If I myself had to put a meaning to this song, it would be something along the lines of the fact that we expose ourselves to things that someone or something of our nature should not honestly be exposed to, but rather the fact that it seems oh-so natural to be surrounded by death, hate, lies, etc. all the time. Sensitivity as a culture much less, and as a whole populace (The Human race) is linked to creativity and perception of life as it is known. Not to mention this songs got some amazing vocals by my favourite singer, and musically these guys have it down packed.
Thinking | Reviewer: wow | 2/15/10
First of all, "ed" ur a douche. This may hurt a little, but maybe u should use ur head for somethin besides maintaining your center of gravity. But, then again, it's probably so empty it wouldnt matter anyway. Just because you cant see the hidden meanings in things doesnt mean u hafta trash a band you supposedly used to like. but hey, i guess if all i did was pet my little rooster (understand THAT meaning?), i would most likely feel the urge too. Seondly, to all you other guys out there who actually have half a brain, thank you for realizing that u cant take all things literally; especially tool's lyrics. And they say metalheads are all shitfaced stoners...

Its about emotionnnn lifeeee druggssss sexxxx lovee hateee. Stop trying to define it. He writes about everything. Hes a fucking genious. Stop being so simple minded and look deeper its not just ANAL FISTING AND BULLSHIT i dont even think thats close to what hes talking about. All of NIN songs are about about life experiences things hes experienced in life DRUGS are very present in his life or in his past life. Just think deeper.
Who cares? | Reviewer: Jerry | 1/26/10
Who cares if they're gay or not? (Probably not) It's honestly none of your business, and if that somehow affects the sound of their music... I don't know, makes it suck or something, you don't have any business listening to the band. Go flame up another website, will you?
It's pretty clear... | Reviewer: Mike | 1/26/10
with the line... "Something kinda sad about the way that things have come to be. Desensitized to everything. What became of subtlety?"
It's pretty clear that the song is about the subliminal message of always wanting more, and being overly desensitized in todays society.

Wow, I wonder why no one can get that Tool's songs ARE about what they seem to be (sex, anal fisting, rape whatever) AND something more meaningful between the lines. I love the way that they combine the raw and dirty with the emotional to create such intense music.
