As someone else quoted, The song is what you make it. It means what you think it means, that's whats important.
However, I do think that this song has an intended meaning. "The pot calling the kettle black" is a clear reference in this song. The repeated "You must have been HIGH" emphasis on high,is a phrase commonly said, but not particularly meant in the literal sense. The references to lawyers/liars, what's the difference.
Clearly the song is talking about hypocrites. The pot calling the kettle black. Quite possibly talking about lawyers, prosecutors, convicting people for drugs, when they themselves do drugs.
On the other hand, I've yet to find a tool song that didn't seem to have a deeper intended meaning then the lyrics initially give way to.
To quote aenema "Read between the lines, I can't imagine why you wouldn't anyways?"
Accept reality | Reviewer: Beanhoot | 1/10/11
No one can interpret Tool, ever. It's as simple as that. You can try all you want, you could pull a seemingly air-tight analysis out your ass, and it would probably be wrong. Because god works in mysterious ways, and Tool are gods, therefore Tool work in mysterious ways that no mortal should ever have the right to understand.
Other than the reality I've stated, this may be one of their best songs ever, and that's saying a lot.

TOOL. The lead singer said this in an interview on the internet.

It's what the songs mean to YOU. It doesn't matter what they write about. That's what the magic is with music guys. You'd think a bunch of people listening to tool would already understand this.
You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Stop...stop...depending on another, to define. To explain, give meaning and purpose to things we experience. Just find it for yourself, as much as you can, I know I am being influenced by the music, people, experiences I feel right now, it's how I ended up here...find your place, hopefully without any our comments, doubts, opinions about a recording of sound waves of apparently another conscious voice of independence...find yourself...use the music as a TOOL.

Mock justice
The term is often applied to courts subjectively judged as such, while others consider the court to be legitimate and legal. A kangaroo court may be a court that has had its integrity compromised; for example, if the judge is not impartial and refuses to be recused.
It may also be an elaborately scripted event intended to appear fair while having the outcome predetermined from the start. Terms meaning "show trial", like the German Schauprozess, indicate the result is fixed before (usually guilty): the "trial" is just for show. Notorious were Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin's kangaroo trials against his enemies, whom he labeled enemies of the people, notably in the context of the Great Purge.
In 2008, Singapore’s Attorney-General applied to the High Court to commence contempt proceedings against three individuals who appeared in the new Supreme Court building wearing identical white T-shirts bearing a palm-sized picture of a kangaroo dressed in a judge’s gown.[2]

U guys are all idiots
This song is indeed about drugs but not directly
they are referring to the Kangaroo court ( which is why the reason they put Kangaroo done hung the juror with the innocent which means
The kangaroo court is sentencing people for marijuana crimes with out any real proof and their begging for balance from the guru.
Got it ?
Ah, the REAL meaning! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/6/10
The lyrics of the song definitely have a clear double-meaning. Everyone's missing the TRUE points of the song! Those cats in TOOL are some wacky, crazy, zany guys!
The first meaning is really about using the TOILET! Yep, that's definitely what it is. The pot. The commode. The ol' toady. The throne. The stool. The crapper. Where we all truly do our deepest thinking!
See, it's really all about taking a huge dump, and the deep thoughts that go through your head while doing so - you know, "layin' fiber-cable," "pinching a loaf," or "taking the Browns to the Super Bowl". All popular euphemisms for pooping, something we all do every day (if we're normal, that is...).
'Kangaroo' is obviously mentioned throw us all off, and it's believable because kangaroos, like humans and other mammals, also take dumps. (However, I'm not sure if kangaroos can be toilet-trained... I'd have to look that one up or ask a buddy of mine in Australia if he knows the answer to this mystery.)
Meanwhile, "black kettle" is what people might take a dump in, in an emergency, if they don't have immediate access to a toilet. How could anyone have missed this?
Not to mention, the word "pissing" appears a couple of times, which sometimes happens while taking a dump. Hey, I wouldn't want someone pissing all over MY black kettle, if that's what I was going to take a dump in. See what I mean? Find your OWN damn kettle the poop in, this one's MINE. Seeeeee?
The second meaning also refers to the toilet and to taking a massive dump. However, it is a metaphorical referece to all of the people who will argue over the meaning of the lyrics. Essentially, that's what we're all doing here, in a verbal sense.
I know this because I read through these arguments while browsing on my laptop, and taking a dump myself, and it just makes perfect sense. :)
Now the mystery is solved!
(Now, if anyone honestly thinks I'm being serious with any of this... well, you can go ahead and think so if you really want. It's all what you interpret from it, isn't it?)
Meaning | Reviewer: Aeon927 | 4/27/10
Songs are fully open for interpretation, so its not really up to anyone to say that someone elses interpretation is wrong. It really depends how much you read into it but it. Obviously there is an intended meaning though and it comes across pretty strongly, i'm sure people have grounds for thinking its just about pot though, especially if they don't really read into the lyrics.

I believe the song to be about government officials laying down laws about marajuana and pushing pot heads around when they themselves do alot heavier drugs like heroine and other extremely heavy drugs.
True Tool Fans? | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/2/10
Any true tool fan would realize that the title and reference to POT in the song The Pot is not just about smoking, as much as the MINDLESS stoners like to think it is. The reference to pot in the song is a double entendre meant to be observed in two ways, kangaroo courts being high above others as well as being the slang term for cannabis. Pot calling the kettle black, an idiom, meaning the kangaroo court being hypocritically guilty of what they are pointing out. SO ROLL ONE UP AND MISS SO MORE IN DEPTH MEANINGS OF TOOL SONGS AND LEAVE THE COMPLEX THINGS TO INTELLIGENT PEOPLE WHO MAY SMOKE TOO.
all those lost sheep being found | Reviewer: truthbyjustin | 4/12/10
o.k. people you have the answer...the song is about hypocrisy within the judicial system...no need to wonder lost sheep here's your shepherd...those in the dark here's your light...if ever this happens again look within the enlightened side of self...you can do it...

It's great to hear that modern rockers can still bring hard hitting truth to the surface in a web of articulate rhythmic and melodic complexity.
Musically it's progressive with bits of hard rock, metal, grunge and even jazz, as the syncopated rhythms are weaved into a tapestry of undeniable power, that reaches into the soul extracting the essence of the universe, revealing man in his nakedness; Awesome! The thrust of rhythmic power is undeniable.
Lyrically he's a Truth Sayer that honestly and powerfully brings to light the corrupt and hypocritical political and justice systems as pertaining to one of the least harmful and most beneficial natural substances known to man, "Marijuana."
Keep in mind that though what he is saying is in truth, do not walk blindly into a world of drug abuse. We have needlessly lost many great artists and aficionados to drugs. Remember, that as with "all" drugs whether "legal" or "illegal," you must remain diligent to ensure you control the drug! Never allow the drug to control you! Drugs are "tools" (no pun intended) and must be respected!
And always remember to keep these corrupt and hypocritical political and justice figures in check by casting them out with your "vote." In truth, we only have room for good people as our leaders, people that really care about one another, because all that glitters is surely not gold.
We live in the world, | Reviewer: PE | 3/21/10
where everything has many meanings. Such as this song. It could be about drugs, political career, sports, and many other illustration. More clue's lyrics get, the better the song.
I prefer to version about drugs, and not because of unofficial video.
These rubrics:
Eye hole deep in muddy waters /seeing things unlogically/
Trapped without a reason /trapped in constant moment/
Ganja Please /no comments about this one/.
And unofficial video has some nice ideas- especially last- with a woman. When using drugs too much, mind become constantly stoned, and even sex is not any more best thing to do.
This is my first and the last comment about "Tool" songs. Listen that, don't argue.
WTH? | Reviewer: god | 2/19/10
You do realize this is a "Fuck Power" song right?
I used to know a huge tool fan that had no clue what this song was about, and surprise! He was an over-controlling hypocrite, just like the rest of the political freaks.
