Review about And It Stoned Me
------Performed by Van Morrison | 05/06/2007 11:00:00 AM

The Perfect Song?

And It Stoned Me is Van Morrison at his most reflective and sentimental but never does he lapse into a generalised mawkishness. The song evokes a golden time when youth and freedom were almost a sacred state of being, simple and pure. The beat is a stately dance but overlaid with Vans deeply personal vocals, it steps its way delicately into our subconscious. We can see the sunshine on the grassy meadows and feel the deep, vital pleasure of that crystal clear stream on our skin. Its impossible to imagine that this song could have been done better or even differently. Nothing, from the piano flourishes to the repetitions of the chorus, stand out as more or less memorable or important to the integrity of the whole. But the overall effect is of a memory. The songs emotional power is distilled in its rendering of a past which we know is gone forever, leaving a part of our soul enriched by having been there once upon a time.
