Behind Blue Eyes Lyrics
Artist(Band):The Who
Review The Song (52)Print the Lyrics
Written by Pete Townshend

No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man behind blue eyes
No one knows what it's like
To be hated, to be fated to telling only lies

But my dreams, they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance that's never free

No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings like I do and I blame you!
No one bites back as hard on their anger
None of my pain and woe can show through

But my dreams, they aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours only lonely
My love is vengeance, that's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

And If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
And If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like to be the bad man
To be the sad man behind blue eyes

Review about Behind Blue Eyes

Reminds me of.... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/22/10

This song reminds f=me so much of Evengi Plushenko! It's unshakable. Also, to those people who don't understand the meaning of the words "none of my pain and woe can show through" keep your comments to yourseld! Some fo us are really hurting, and hide behind masks made of stone and ice. Like me.

Like the song says: "No one knows what it's like, to be the bad man."

RACISM | Reviewer: Mr. Hugepants | 1/2/10

This song shows how easily black and other people with different to white ethnicities can misunderstand "racism" and where and when to shout it out. I happen to be a white man, and just yesterday had been accused of being racist, because I support a conservative party. You know what - its my turn to say: "Racism"

P.S. this song is Great.

cool | Reviewer: Bill | 12/31/09

To Pator TJ I also am a Christian and I am also a big fan of the Who they are a great band, great singer, great guitarist, great drummer, great bassist, I really like how most of their songs aren't dirty. (Except for really Pictures of Lily and Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand) Pictures of Lilly doesn't mention mastorbation, and Mary Anne With the Shaky hand doesn't mention handjobs, they can be about anything you want them to be about.

what he said | Reviewer: Bill | 12/23/09

I completely agree with leonian one time last year i got in an argument with my friend about the election and he said im only voting for mccain because hes white when he said that black people should get free money from the government and other stuff.

White man's burden | Reviewer: Leonian | 12/3/09

I believe that white people have been demonized in our society. All other races and ethnicities have the right to say whatever they want, but not the white person. Whites are quickly labeled "racist." There is a lot of hurt and sorrow behind blue eyes. Brown eyes don't have the market on pain.

daddys tiny dancer | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/30/09

this was one of my daddys favorite songs. i must have heard it a million times in my short life. i had every word memorize. i play it almost everyday in my car to feel a piece of him. it wasn't until a couple months ago & i was playing my daddys favorite song in his honor at his viewing that i truely understood why it was his favorite song.
you can finally rest peacefully above my blue eyed daddy

It's like a story. | Reviewer: Andrew | 11/9/09

This song when I hear it is a story about someone guy or girl who feels misunderstood. So because of that are strugling with feelings of extreme hostilty and other emotions. But they know they can't let their emotions show because they for not only are afraid for what might happen to others but to themself. So they hide behind a mask, and only their blue eyes is the part of the mask that holds them to gether. That holds their emotions from overwhelming them.
But all in all this song is a very good moveing song.

About Big Brother | Reviewer: Brent | 9/4/09

This song was a key element of the abandoned "Lifehouse" project. The song describes the bad man who is big brother to all humanity, a dictator who controls the masses with propaganda. He cannot show weakness so he cannot smile or show anger. He is in control of all and Townshend is writing about the character's feelings which he cannot share to anyone. It is his loneliness that makes him vulnerable in his isolation. I picture the Apple commercial from the 1984 Superbowl when I think of this character, whom Pete named "Jumbo"

awsome | Reviewer: Hillary | 2/6/09

This song is my Favorite song of all time... am it has alot of meaning to me and the way my life is. with this song i think alot of people can relate. The who did a great job of this song . when they play/sing it you can just feel the emotion of troubled minds..

You miss the point. | Reviewer: Rauðbjørn | 1/30/09

Behind Blue Eyes is not about appearance, it's not about the inherent sameness of the "unique" human condition. This song is about a "bad man" not a junkie, or some white collar thief, but a truely "bad" man. A sociopath, or a borderline personality disorder. It's the internal monologue of this person trying to understand why he's diferent, and only finding that he is, but knowing that he is not the uncaring, unfeeling monster that society paints him to be.

This song really is the anthem of the Harris & Klebolds of the world. Those rejected by their peers, not for what they have done, but for what they are. And then finally, for what they become.
