Give us this day our daily dose of faux affliction
Forgive our sins
Forged at the pulpit with forked tongues selling faux sermons.
'Cause I am a new wave gospel sharp, and you'll be thy witness
So gentlemen, if you're gonna preach, for God sakes preach with conviction!
Strike up the band!
Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No. Don't you get it, don't you get it? Now don't you move.
Strike up the band!
Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No. Don't you get it, don't you get it? Now don't you move.
Just stay where I can see you.
Douse the lights!
We sure are in for a show tonight
In this little number we're graced by two displays of character,
We've got: the gunslinger extraordinaire walking contradictions
And I for one can see no blood from the hearts and the wrists you allegedly slit
And I for one won't stand for this if this scene were a parish you'd all be condemned.
Strike up the band!
Whoa-oh, the conductor is beckoning
Come congregation, let's sing it like you mean it
No. Don't you get it, don't you get it? Now don't you move.

Umm yeah, Sirena?? It's HYPOCRACY! Not hypocritacy... -and just because people cut themselves, doesn't automatically label them as the ignorant term, "emo"... Yes the song MAY be about religion simply because of the fact that Ryan is an atheist, but has anyone ever thought about what he's TRYING to say? Most songs let YOU decide what it means, that's the point of writing a song! Unless, of course, he's actually trying to send a message or get his point across. So here's an idea- if you're that mused of a song, and THE BIGGEST FAN EVER of someone, use that motivation and try to look for the source who knows what the song is all about; THE ARTISTS!!! BTW- I'm not here to critisize other comments on this page, I'm simply putting in my opinion..

I think this is more about scene than religion. Ryan probably made heavy religious references to help express his views/ideas on them. He uses a lot of religious references in the other songs (But It's Better If You Do and Build God, Then We'll Talk and etc), but isn't Christian himself.
"Forged at the pulpit with forked tongues selling faux sermons."
Maybe he's also making fun of the religion?
But then again, this song can be interpreted in many different ways. Whichever suits you is fine.
I think that this song is trying to say that you should beleive in some higher force but beleive it in your own way don't do it how other people want you to. "come congregation lets sing it like YOU mean it" It is religious in a way but it could just be describing a situation. but that's just what i think

I think I have to side with the social scene idea. There are things called metaphors, and perhaps one should look at that definition before they think that every song that has the word 'parish' or 'god' in it is about religion/Jesus/church.
I would also like to point out the the lyricist, Ryan Ross, is an atheist, so why the hell would he care whether priests or parishioners are being honest or not? He's stated that religion isn't important to him in a couple interviews and I find it a little obvious by some of the other lyrics he wrote (i.e. 'and we're all too smart to talk to God').
But if you want to think it's about religion and all that jazz, be my guest. To each his own, right?

hay peoples!!!!!!!
k, i love this song!!!!!!!!
i think it could be about the emo or "scene" peoples, or it could be about the religion.
personally, i think emo poele are awesme! i dont like att that wrist-cutting crap, but you dont need that to be emo. i love the emo people cus they express their feelings and dont just bottle them up and pretend like they dont have them, like alot of people today do. you need to let loose and let it all out!!!!!
you dont have to be happy all the time. we born with feelings, so we might as well express them. emo IS short for emotional so, the name fits XD!!!!
btw, i ♥ PATD and i think theyre music is so deep and meaningful. to actually GET the song, you have to listen to the lyrics and think about them.
plus, ryan Ross and Brendan urie are the hottest guys i have ever seen

"And I for one can see no blood from the hearts and the wrists you allegedly slit
And I for one wont stand for this if this scene were a parish you'd all be condemned."
That part is clearly about the emoscene. Everyone says emos slits their wrists, and put weird videos on youtube crying, but that doesn't really happen. It's a stereotype that doesn't exist. Well, ok, some may do the wrist-thingy. But thats not a huge amount of people.

I dont think its about religion...i think its just saying that this scene is like a religion...adn that the religion thing isnt to be taken litrally...more like a metaphor.
>>>>And I for one can see no blood

i think its not only this text, within they sing their opinion bout the society. this is, like...
lying is the most fun...a.s.o a critic- song.

amazing | Reviewer: Stella | 11/25/07
this is just amazing. there are so many meanings, and probably a lot that i don't even know yet.
his vocals are also amazing in this song. for some reason i love the way he sings, 'you'll be thy witness'
also, i love how he sings 'just stay where i can see you' the first time. it's so beautiful. i love this song!

It's not about the kids today, emo...stuff like that. It's about RELIGION. The inconsistancy of preachers and people who consider themselves a holy person. Why? Because only god and Jesus are the only ones who are PERFECT. Never sinning. It's about how technically preachers and and others like that are hypocrits, because they talk about how life for a Christian (or anything else that believes in holiness, being cleansed...ect.) must be filled with being a person of god, and being as perfect as Jesus, following god's footsteps, when really they never can be because people sin everyday. Like, how people go to church and are only "a person of God" under that order. When, they get out they are comepletely wild. It's about consistancy, religion, and hypocritacy.
