http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat's_in_the_Cradle Confusion credited to Cat Stevens"Cat's in the Cradle" is widely mistakenly credited to artist Cat Stevens, in part due to a mistitled MP3 version of the song widely circulated on the internet. As well, the song and the singer both contain the word, 'Cat'. In 1977, Stevens' former label, Deram Records released a compilation album, Cat's Cradle.[3] Jack Black contributed to this confusion, playing part of the song in a Saturday Night Live sketch where Black's character claimed the song was by Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens. There are no known verifiable recordings of Cat Stevens performing the song, however, and a Cat Stevens fan web site assures readers that Stevens has never performed the song, "not live, not in the studio, and not even privately". Stevens did perform a song titled "Father and Son", but that was very different as the son was unsure of his future and the father is a more self-confident man assuring his son not to worry.

Cats in the Cradle
by Harry Chapin

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I’m gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I’m gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
When you comin home, dad, I don’t know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "Thats okay"
And then he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m going to be like him"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad,
You know we'll have a good time then.

I’ve long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day........
I said "I'd like to see you if you don’t mind"
He said "I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.

too much confussion | Reviewer: youngerone | 7/23/09

I think you are confused. You could not have heard Cat Stevens sing cats in the cradle at the Miami convention centre between 1970 to 1972. The song was written by Harry Chapin and his wife Sandy Chapin in 1974 two years after you claim to have heard it. I think you possibly heard Cat Stevens sing "Father and son" an equally wonderful song written by Cat.As it was over 35 years ago I would suggest your memory might be playing tricks. To all the other people who insist Cat Stevens sang this song I challenge you to tell me the name of any album you heard it on. Not just some vague description like "I haerd it at primary school", Give me the actual album. I guarantee you can't.

Live from the miami beach convention center(early 70's) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 7/9/09

Just recently I overheard some people at work talking about cats in the cradle song. I commented that I saw Cat Stevens perform it live at the miami beach convention center in the early 1970's. It was sometime between 1970-1972. I didn't realize that Harry chapin and/or his wife actually wrote the lyrics sung beautifully by the late Harry Chapin. It really was done beautifully by Mr.Chapin but from what I remember Cat Stevens version was also equally as beautiful and I did see him perform it live. Thankyou

Cat Stevens did record Cats in a Cradle | Reviewer: Autumn Murr | 1/25/09

Why there was only a few albums with the song recorded by Cat Stevens, I do not know. However, I had one in the seventies and the recording was beautiful. Maybe Cat sponged the recording because he didn't write the lyrics. It was the most beautiful recording of this song ever.

love this song | Reviewer: clarky | 10/19/08

this song is amazing i love it so much i did a review on it at school sung half the song lyrics and im pretty sure the only reason i got and a+ was because my teacher pitted me singing like an absolute idiot but overall great song gotta love really touches many hearts

Lesson for Father's Day | Reviewer: CliveC | 6/22/08

Guys, the REAL issue here is the content of the lyrics. It played on the radio a couple of times in the months when my wife was expecting our child, when I held him for the first time and we were alone together I sung him some of the words and promised him I'd do my best. I thank God that that both he & I & Mum have done very well together.

Cat's Cradle | Reviewer: The Fug | 3/15/08

Sorry people, Cat Stevens never recorded the Harry Chapin hit, Cat's in the Cradle. During the mid 1970s to mid 80s I worked for WEA Records( Warner Brothers) and CBS Columbia Records, now called SONY. Although he was under contract with A&M Records, I did have the pleasure of meeting Cat Stevens twice. I assure you he didn't record Cat's in the Cradle for A&M Records. However in 1978,London Records release a "best of" set in England called, London Collector: Cat's Cradle. I think that might be where the confusion started. Hope this helped.

enough | Reviewer: casey | 3/6/08

Cat Stevens NEVER sang this song. Period. If you believe that Cat Stevens sang this song please provide a little more proof than "Limewire says it's Cat Stevens". I challenge everybody here to provide the name of the supposed Cat Stevens album where this song appeared. If you are not prepared to provide this proof then just shut the f*ck up, because you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Cat Stevens | Reviewer: Karen | 2/18/08

Cat sang the song, thats fact. | Reviewer: Chris Currin | 2/10/08

In the 1970's my 6th grade class played a record at recess time with Cat Stevens' name and face on the album cover. We played the song "Cats in the cradle" repeatedly from that album. No mistake about that.Yes Harry wrote it,but like other songs, other artists sing them, not just the one who wrote them.

Where is it? | Reviewer: Phil | 1/13/08

So after reading the comments about this, a Harry Chapin song, I immediately understood the confusion. Yes, almost every copy of this song shared over Limewire and the such have it mislabeled as Cat Stevens when in fact it was one of the numerous versions recorded by Chapin (I have an extension Chapin collection and can even provide date and location of recording for any version presented to me).

But, what if Cat Stevens did actually perform it and what if there are recordings of it out there? If that's the case, which some of you lead me to believe, I wanted it. So I spent the past two months looking for a legitimate C.Stevens recording of this song and have been unable to locate one.

Limewire and it's ilk aside, there is also no Cat Stevens recording on iTunes, there is no Cat Stevens recording on MP3.com and, perhaps the one place that now has the most impact, no recording on Amazon.com (their latest deal provides them with all major recording companies catalogs). Of the 350+ copies I downloaded from elsewhere which were credited as being Cat Stevens, not a single one was. Most commonly found were copies of the version on Chapins "Greatest Stories..." album and I did, infact, find a recording from a benefit concert held at a Huntington, Long Island (where Chapin lived) school.

If you seriously do have a Cat Stevens recording, please provide me with details on where I can go to buy it as it would definitely be something I would want for my collection. Unfortunately, until someone does actually provide me with such info (accurate), my 2 month+ search leaves me to conclude that there is no such recording.
