Cindy (featuring Nick Cave) Lyrics - Johnny Cash

Review The Song (3)

I wish I was an apple, a-hangin' on a tree and every time my Cindy passed, she'd take a little bite of me.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day.

Well, Cindy is my honey the sweetest in the south, when we kissed to bees would all swarm around her mouth.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day.

Well, I wish I had a needle and thread, fine as I could sew. I'd sew my Cindy to my side and down the road I'd go.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day.

Well, Cindy got religion. She'd had it once before, she grabbed my ole banjo, man and throw it on the floor.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day.

Well, it's apples in the summer time, peaches in the fall. If I can't have the gal I want I won't have none at all.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day.

Cindy hugged and kissed me, she hung her head and cried, I swore she was the prettiest thing that ever lived or died.

Get along, home, Cindy, Cindy, get along home. Get along home, Cindy, Cindy, I'll marry you one day
I'll marry you one day

that's MY song! | Reviewer: Cindy Cabough | 8/3/11

I was just five years old when I first heard Ricky Nelson sing that song in the John Wayne movie “Rio Bravo”, but I remember it vividly. I was visiting my Nana next door and was rocking my favorite doll, also named Cindy, to sleep in her little pink cradle. When I heard our name ring out in the folksy chorus, I excitedly grabbed her from the cradle and held her up to the TV so she could witness it herself; “Look, Cindy!”, I exclaimed, “We’re on TV! And we’ve got to get home!”

Throughout my childhood my Mom would often sing the song to me, and it thrilled me each time to not only hear my name being sung, but to wistfully imagine that somebody wanted me to come home so they could have me to themselves.

On my 20th birthday I was celebrating at a gospel dinner theater in Pigeon Forge when the performer sang the song in my honor, then commented on how we should all be mindful of our pilgrimage through this world in our appointed quest to get to our final home in heaven. Since then, the song took on a new meaning for me, and I have tried to keep my life focus on “getting along home” to my ultimate home in heaven. My Christian journey since that revelation has been somewhat capricious and bumpy, but through it all, the LORD gracefully sustained my vision and confidence in a sure destination, and has mercifully kept me on His appointed path.

When I was a kid, growing up in Memphis, TN - a boy from next door would sing this song to me just about everytime I went outdoors. Today I answered the phone where I work - always saying my name "this is Cindy" and the voice on the other end of the line started singing that song to me! Turns out - it was someone I know, but they knew nothing about the boy from next door - way back when, what a huge blast from the past!

When I was a kid, growing up in Memphis, TN (Shelby County) - the boy next door used to sing this song to me almost every single time he saw me outdoors. Today, I live in Colorado and work in an Emergency Department - and the wierdest thing happened. I answered the phone "Montrose Memorial Emergency Department, this is Cindy" and the voice on the other end of the phone started singing this song to me! I couldn't believe it! It turned out to be someone I know, but that knows nothing about this song's and my history. It prompted me to look into who sang this song and that's how I came across this site. What a blast from the past!
