Review The Song (7)Print the Lyrics
The work-a-days were propping the bar quietly erasing the week
and I was in a corner booth thinking (pretending to read)
about the impossibility of one to love unconditionally
and the words that we drive into the ground:
their repetition starts to thin their meaning.
Then everything got frighteningly still as they entered and intersected the floor
and I tried to choke my stare at perfection that others would kill for.
But all of the parts are the same on every face -- few variables change.
The differences pale when compared to the similarities they share.
Finally there is clarity and there is purpose after all.
But every night ends the same as I'm collapsing once more by your side.
Finally there is clarity: this tiny life is making sense
and every drop numbs the both of us, but I alone am staggering.

I’m sure any of the offered interpretations are right. It seems pretty straightforward to me. This song is about “the impossibility of loving unconditionally”. The title explains that the singer is debating with himself about his girlfriend and that it makes him doubt about the value of his love for her.
There, alone in a bar, he entertains the following reasoning : After a while, ‘I love you’ becomes meaningless as you repeat it over and over again. You start wanting other girls.” Then a group of “perfect” girls come by, “intersecting the floor”, girls so nice looking guys would “kill for” them. But in the end, aren’t they all the same ? If the singer would get one of these girls, he would sooner or later fall back into the same feeling that his love for her is growing old. Perfection, in this respect, offers no cure, and there is no point trying to find the perfect girl : “the differences pale when compared to the similarities they have”.
“Then finally there is clarity” about what is the purpose of being with the loved one… but what is it ? The argument seems to be something like : “Since perfection isn’t even enough, then I can settle for my imperfect girlfriend” ! On a deeper level, the singer seems to suggest that you know the uniqueness of your girlfriend, whereas stranger are but faces. And yet… the uniqueness of the loved one soon fades away itself into repetition and boredom. Hence : “Every night ends the same” and “every drop (into the bed to sleep) numbs us both”, leaving the singer staggering and unsatisfied with his conclusions about perfection… while his girlfriend seems perfectly satisfied.
This song, in the end, seems to be about a fundamental problem that love becomes meaningless over time, and how thinking about it only makes the matter worse. It is clear that at the end of the song the singer is still debating with himself. If only love could be possible, everything would make sense… but how to achieve this is far from clear. The sadness and lamenting of the song seems to enforce this interpretation.

did anyone notice that this song is similar to tiny vessels?

in tiny vessels, gibbard writes, "you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me." that's sort of the same in this song because here, he is upset by all the people who gawk at perfection and beauty when it really doesn't mean anything and doesn't lead to love. in tiny vessels, he notices the girl's beauty, but still does not love her.

sorry for the double post. also, i think that this song can be about whatever you want it to be about; there is no right or wrong answer. that's what's so great about songs and writing in general. there are so many different interpretations and one song can mean so many different things to people. i'm not even sure that i still believe what i wrote. perceptions change over time and differ among people.

death cab is so great because their lyrics don't just mean one simple thing and they are not always straightforward. this is why i love ben gibbard's lyrics and the stories he tells.

i think that while he is trying to figure out if someone can "love unconditionally," he sees that those who seem "perfect" are really not any different than anyone else

so if perfection is meaningless, he tries to figure out what in life has true significance

and he finally finds the meaning of life, and the truth about loving someone ("finally there is clarity")

but this discovery leads to a realization that his relationship is in trouble, or that there is something wrong with his love, so his lover is oblivious while he is alone is left "staggering"

I'm pretty sure that's not what it's about -_-

The "Doubt" the person [presumably Ben Gibbard] feels is whether or not one can "love unconditionally," and he is disgusted by people he sees who are physically perfect but not at all unique.

He sees clarity, but then realizes that he "collapses" again "by your side," which appears to be a reference to his sexual desire, in contrast to unconditional love.

In the end, both he and his lover are numb, but he alone "is staggering," which could mean he's the only one who has to bear his numbness, or the only of the two who cares or even notices.

Awesome. | Reviewer: kim | 10/8/07

These lyrics are incredibly perceptive. It's all about how love is thrown around and that people will do anything for it, even give up their self respect in an attempt to be loved in return. Love it.
