Review The Song (10)Print the Lyrics
I threw your keys in the water, I looked back,
Theyd frozen halfway down in the ice.
They froze up so quickly, the keys and their owners,
Even after the anger, it all turned silent, and
The everyday turned solitary,
So we came to February.

First we forgot where wed planted those bulbs last year,
Then we forgot that wed planted at all,
Then we forgot what plants are altogether,
and I blamed you for my freezing and forgetting and
The nights were long and cold and scary,
Can we live through February?

You know I think Christmas was a long red glare,
Shot up like a warning, we gave presents without cards,
And then the snow,
And then the snow came, we were always out shoveling,
And wed drop to sleep exhausted,
Then wed wake up, and its snowing.

And February was so long that it lasted into March
And found us walking a path alone together.
You stopped and pointed and you said, "Thats a crocus,"
And I said, "Whats a crocus?" and you said, "Its a flower,"
I tried to remember, but I said, "Whats a flower?"
You said, "I still love you."

The leaves were turning as we drove to the hardware store,
My new lover made me keys to the house,
And when we got home, well we just started chopping wood,
Because you never know how next year will be,
And well gather all our arms can carry,
I have lost to February.

Review about February

Not literal | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/19/2008

For me - and this is entirely subjective - this is about a couple who have been together so long that they are entering their golden years together - and one of them at least is having trouble with memory - Alzheimers maybe, hence the forgetfulness. There is not a new lover at the end - it's just that one of them has such little short term memory that she sees her life partner as a new lover.
Maybe that can be a good and positive thing. Certainly the song is about the enduring nature of love for a lucky few. And yes - it is beautiful.

my thoughts | Reviewer: Aily | 3/9/2008

This wonderful song is one long metaphor for a dying relationship. Sometimes, even if you work hard at it, (all day digging snow) it still doesn't work (wake up....and it's snowing). All you can do in the next relationship is gather all you can to see you through the hard days. By the way, I always thought it was two women, not a woman and man. Is that me projecting?

great song!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/12/2008

i love this song, i love dar..saw her live recently, she's just the best isn't she!? well wow this song is one of my personal favorites and even some people don't see the deepness of the real meaning and relationships...i think we can all agree february is just a sucky month for a lot of people, including me. this song helps like nothing else =D

february | Reviewer: c.joy | 2/11/2008

This song i believe has nothing to do with winter it's about the ups and downs of a relationship and that you don't really see the warning signs of how everything went wrong untill it has already fallen apart. And as two people drift away it seems like everything unraveled and it's hard to see where. Until they come back together.

yeah | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/5/2007

yeah, it's definitely about relationships. and winter. but not the beauty of it. it's about how the ice and snow and cold can break us, make us forget. about how hard it is to love someone through all that. i've always loved the part about the crocuses, about how we forget how to recognize the first signs of spring.

Um. | Reviewer: dc | 10/23/2007

This song is about the slow death and final end of a relationship. The singer has a new lover in the last verse- she couldn't make it to Spring with the man the song is about. I find it incredibly sad and moving, and more morose than hopeful.

rekindling | Reviewer: chris | 10/13/2007

Have I missed the point? I don't see this is about the beauty of winter, at all. It's about relationships -- the lows that each pair of lovers have symbolized by winter. The rekindling of love by "spring," and the need to collect wood (good times) to fuel the relationship for the next low because all relationships have the lows (winters), the highs (springs), and the times to store up the love (autumn).

Where did you get the lyrics | Reviewer: William Page | 6/5/2007

The lyrics of this song are identical to a poem I
wrote. Where did you get them? I noticed there is some litigation concerning this particular album. Please reply.

February is like heaven | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/1/2006

It's just not February without this song. For the past 6 years, I can't last to March unless I play it over and over. Dar has the voice of an angel, combine that with the beautiful, smooth sound of the cello and the quiet acoustic guitar and you have pure heaven, like New England waking up after a snowfall.

A Review | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/8/2005

This is such a beautiful song. Whether or not you love winter, this is a great song. So pretty and thoughtful, it will put you into a weird, silent mood. I especially love the verse with the crocus. Best part of the song. If you listen to this any time of the year other than winter, it will actually have you longing for those winter months. Good song to listen to on Valentine's Day, if you actually //like// that holiday.
