Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics

Review The Song (54)Print the Lyrics
I was a quick, wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

Have I found you, Flightless Bird;
Jealous, weeping?
Or lost you, American Mouth;
Big Pill, looming?

Now I’m a fat house cat
Nursing my sore, blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Crawl through the wide fence cracks
Pissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you?, Flightless Bird;
Grounded, bleeding?
Or lost you, American Mouth;
Big Pill, stuck going down

Review about Flightless Bird, American Mouth

my opinion | Reviewer: unknownpersonality | 11/7/09

Though I heard this song in the Twilight soundtrack, I never tie the songs with the movie, unless it's a musical.

I won't write about what I think it means, because that would just confuse people.

This is a very pretty song, I like it.

Just a thought!! :) | Reviewer: Anonymous | 11/8/09

I love dis song so much!Its really strange how it just randomly enters my head. Ok so lyric meanings rite...well I honestly dont know. I guess to me it's about dis spontanous young guy dat was in love and got in way over his head, (in too deep).D girl was more mature or wise and could always shed light on his foolish ways.But den something happened and their relationship was ended by someone,parents or his foolish ways and she left.He searched for her with his dog-eared map.The flightless bird refers 2 her as she is trapped, possibly jealous by wat he did, or weeping.American mouth is probably his own mouth dat might have gotten hin into trouble n d big pill is his idea of suicide as he lost her. D fat house cat is himself years later after having lost her and stills want 2 find her but has lost all hope.He is still nursing his sore blunt tongue dat said things he regrets. He is lazy now and feels like he has no purpose and cant function as he refers 2 himself as a cat but still lets all the rats cum and go. D fishing lures dat cause death and catch people out r cleansed in d cold stream and he hates dis idea of easy forgiveness and redemption. H e is still looking 4 his flightless bird dat he imagines is grounded bleeding - hurt and has lost any faith,dreams or spirit dat would make her soar. And the big pill stuck going down is d guy committing suicide and not even getting dat right as he feels useless. Sorry if none of dat made sense. Just my random rambelings! :)

True Meaning | Reviewer: Ohms | 10/7/09

Here's what I make of the meaning. Its a love song to America or the American ideal.
The first 2 line
"Quick wet boy" Clever but Naive man
"Diving deep for coins" Chasing money and the High life Illegally
"Street Light.... plastic toys" - America admired him for what he owned ie.cars, house etc
"Cops closed the fair" - went to jail
"Cut... baby hair" - No longer Naive
"Stole me a dog eared map" - Looked for answers that many have looked for
"Called... everywhere" - Still trying to understand what went wrong
"Have I found you... bird" - "Asks himself if this is what america is about"
"Lost you you ..." - "Asks himself if he misunderstood what america is about"

THE following part is about Him in jail many years later.
"Walm poisen rats" Watching new people coming in to jail.
"Wide cracks" How easy it is to get into jail
"Pissing on mag photos" - an insult to the american ideal
"Fishing lures" - the entrapments on the american way

==========================
Its sad if you think of it that way

the song speaks for itself. | Reviewer: rawrskiis. | 7/21/09

this is my own interpretation of the song. It is about a young boy who was in love with this girl, and tried to impress her and show her how much he cared for her by spending heaps of money ( "diving too deep for coins" ). The "plastic toys" are the gifts he bought her. When it mentions "cops closed the fair" it refers to the girl's parents who found out about the two and broke them up. The boy then matures "cutting my long baby hair" and tries to find the girl again yet to no avail "...map and called for you everywhere".
He hasn't found her, she is the "flightless bird", the "american mouth" is his own mouth and the "big pill..looming" is his thoughts about suicide/overdosing.
Years go by, now this boy is an old man "fat house cat" and he can no longer speak "nursing my sore blunt tongue", his family visit from time to time " rats..fence cracks", he begins to reminisce on the past and the whole deal about the "fishing lures thrown" is about him taking the bait, taking his own life.. The second chorus talks about the girl being presumed dead -"grounded..bleeding" and ends with the "big pill stuck going down" and the man is now ending his life.. So yeah thats my interpretation of this meaningful song. It was awesome in Twilight and fit in perfectly with the dance scene with Bella and Edward.
Cheers :)

people's own meanings | Reviewer: raine | 6/7/09

To me these lyrics could be use for mostly anything...
but
for me its about two people in love but it not being enough
also to me its about losing someone
hense "have i lost you american mouth"
flightless bird is to me naming someone and the same goes to ameican mouth
when i think of flightless bird im thinking of someone who is lost not being able to find their way
and american mouth could mean anything really but to me it seems like it means someone who is over spoken..not caring who hears them and if they care or not
its a truely wonderfull but sad song...
love iron and wine!

gabs | Reviewer: gabs | 4/30/09

the meaning of the lyrics are wierd, well i undertand it differently than u guys but ill explain it anyways. well its really about like ptostitues and sex and drugs u know crap like that. "all of you'er street light eyes wide on my plastic toys" mean that there are prostitues that are looking at him and there eyes are shining on his toys. "then when the cops closed the fair i cut my long baby hair" means when the cops came to close the fair he's baby hair fell off and the new hair started growing. when he says "have i found you flightless bird...or lost you american mouth" means that he has tried to find her, a prostitud he sleped with, and hasnt found her.
"now im a fat house cat nursing my sore blunt tong" means that he's trying to forget all the bad things he did, trying to clean everything he did wrong."watching the warm poissons rats..."means he's watching all these peaple getting druged.then everithing after that i dont gete it. and i LOVE this song too. your welcome if i did any help.

not only twilight | Reviewer: squish | 4/23/09

this song is amazing. it moves me. i want to take my boyfriend to learn the waltz for this song. i first got it off the twilight soundtrack, yes, but i rarely tie songs to movies. its just a moving song, i wish i knew what the lyrics really meant, because it sounds really deep.

let it speak to you (as an individual) | Reviewer: Lacee | 4/27/09

I really don't think this beautiful song needs to have a definite meaning - to the listener(s). I absolutely love this song and it speaks to me in so many different ways that I understand.

Let the song speak to you and you'll find your own interpretation(s) and understanding(s)...

Yes, I'm a new fan | Reviewer: Terah | 4/14/09

Yes, I'm sorry, I am yet another person who is going to tie Flightless Bird in with Twilight. Only to say that I first heard it on the movie, liked it, Fell in love with it, and now I cannot wait to go get some Iron & Wine cds. I wish I had heard of him before the movie, totally would've been my all time favorite. I gotta say Kristen Stewart has great taste, seeing as how she suggested Flightless Bird. They would've been crazy if they hadn't listened to her.
