GOING UNDERGROUND Lyrics

Review The Song (6)Print the Lyrics
Some people might say my life is in a rut,
But I'm quite happy living with what I got
People might say that I should strive for more,
But I'm so happy I can't see the point.
Somethings happening here today
A show of strength with your boy's brigade and,
I'm so happy and you're so kind
You want more money - of course I don't mind
To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes

And the public gets what the public wants
But I want nothing this society's got -
I'm going underground, (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground, (going underground)
Well let the boys all sing and the boys all shout for tomorrow

Some people might get some pleasure out of hate
Me, I've enough already on my plate
People might need some tension to relax
[Me?] I'm too busy dodging between the flak

What you see is what you get
You've made your bed, you better lie in it
You choose your leaders and place your trust
As their lies put you down and their promises bust
You'll see kidney machine replaced by rockets and guns

And the public wants what the public gets
But I don't get what this society wants
I'm going underground, (going underground)
Well the brass bands play and feet start to pound
Going underground, (going underground)
[So] let the boys all sing and let the boys all shout for tomorrow

We talk and we talk until my head explodes
I turn on the news and my body froze
Braying sheep on my TV screen
Make this boy shout, make this boy scream!

Going underground, I'm going underground!

The Dream's Still Relevant | Reviewer: Razor | 5/13/2007

Nevermind Thatchers britain or the generation this was sung to. To me as a politically minded young person in today's Britain, this song still speaks volumes of todays society. It never changed, so why should we stop singing this song from the tops of our roof's until things start to get better?

What happened to this ideal of being free from Society's infernal ways as so brilliantly expressed in this song? Hate, Consumerism and War, I want nothing this society's got. Do we really want these things from life? I'm Going Undergound. You still with us?

The Jam were one of those bands that reflected their times and spoke for and to the disaffected. Going Underground is one of those songs that enter the nations consciousness and are never forgotten by anyone who under 30 at the time. It's about the disillusionment of youth, growing up in an England full of nuclear fear, unemployment and a government so removed from the people that we became the generation that ceased to care any more. Along with Going Underground, Funeral Pyre and Strange Town, Going Underground summarised what it what like growing up in Thatcher's Britain for anyone who was not one of the priveleged classes.

No1 | Reviewer: Palescue | 8/1/2005

Music can change your life. To me it did anyway, and several times at that. Going Underground is one of those pieces of music that did it. First time I heard it I was blown away. It shot to no 1 in the UK charts at once. That's why it was played as a phenomena on Dutch radio and did next to nothing in the Dutch music scene, and though I later that year visited a concert of the Jam in Paradiso, Amsterdam (Mark where are you now?), it was packed with people, bbut mainly mad eEnglishmen who litterally walked over the heads to the stage. That's what? a quarter of a century ago and I still listento all the new pop-music but Going Underground is to me the no.1 pop song of all times.
