The title track and first single of Gordon Lightfoot's new
album, A Painter Passing Through, has a lot to do with the
much-decorated artist who sings it.
"It's very autobiographical," says Lightfoot, who wrote the
song and all but two of the 10 cuts on his new disc. "It's
sort of the way I see myself now-or could see myself for
quite a few years to come. I turn 60 this year. I've
settled down now, and I'm in this wonderful position of
being allowed to make my own albums-and as usual, the songs
on this album paint pictures."
Be they pictures of wildlife, like the symbolic bird of
"Ringneck Loon," character sketches like the subway busker
in "My Little Love," or Toronto cityscapes like "On Yonge
Street," A Painter Passing Through is full of the uplifting

------ About the song Song For A Winter's Night performed by Gordon Lightfoot
I recently watched a 1968 Smother's Brothers Season 3 DVD (the controversial episode 202) that had Harry Belafonte singing this song. I thought it was so great and had never heard of the song before hearing him sing it. I think his rendition is so compelling and beautiful.
I just saw Gordon Lightfoot in Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, and he chose this song as his encore. Like many others, I thought this was Sarah M's song until I saw it one of Lightfoot's albums a few months ago. What a privilege to hear it from the original artist!! The lyrics are so meaningful and I have added "Song For A Winter's Night" to my list of favourites.

------ About the song The Circle Is Small performed by Gordon Lightfoot
Any Gordy fan would have to admit, there isn't a song that he sings, that isn't absolutely awesome!! "The Circle Is Small" for me, is 'one' of his best! The lyrics, the music, the way he sings it.. gives me shivers!! I can listen to this song, cranked loudly, over and over and over....

------ About the song Song For A Winter's Night performed by Gordon Lightfoot
As Anonymous pointed out the problems with "true Identity" or origins of artists can be an issue as I always thought Lightfoot was American until I looked at his bio. That said, this shouldn't distract from the fact that his origins don't matter, it's the music that's important and this song is fantastic.
Also check out other's such as Rich Man's Spiritual, Steel Rail Blues and Walls. All funky songs however there is just too many great ones to list.

------ About the song Daylight Katy performed by Gordon Lightfoot
This is a wistful and evocative song with lyrics that say a lot without being obvious. Very few singer songwriters besides Gordon Lightfoot can combine poetry storytelling and music into something this haunting and thoughtful. A beautiful song telling a sad and dreamy tale.

------ About the song Song For A Winter's Night performed by Gordon Lightfoot
I have been an avid admirer of this gentle man's work for most of my over 40 years on this planet! I grew up with this distinctly Canadian voice being a part of my daily musical experience...you could not have grown up in Canada in the 70's and NOT have heard of this guineus!
This song reminds me of winter's nights on the farm in Ontario..sleigh bells and all!
Wonderful to have another Canadian make her own classic out of it...Sarah M of course!
Unfortunatley I am worried we as Canadians are "exporting" all our greats to the US..and that their true identity often gets "muddied" in American production styles!

------ About the song Summer Side Of Life performed by Gordon Lightfoot
Reminds me of a Disney movie - the one where the Dog is scared by the Bear (above the waterfall), and they both fall in the water, and then he gets to the shore:"and if you saw him now...."
Because the animals were people.
I am a long time admirer of Lightfoot and his wonderful tales in music. But, I had never heard this song until Sarah McLachlin produced it for her "Wintersong" album. It is a beautiful, touching song, in true Lightfoot form. Nice job Sarah; beautiful music, Gordon.
The best love song ever written. Lightfoot looks into your soul and sees everything you feel, then puts it to song.

------ About the song Early Mornin' Rain performed by Gordon Lightfoot
Today is The 4th of July, The Independence day for The US of America and although I'm writing this in my homeland in Croatia, I have to think that this day has a deep meaning for every country. When one says independence, one surely means that he is free and that he considers himself a part of that land, not only geographically, but also emotionally and in spirit. America is a big continent with such a varieties I can't even imagine, not to mention that I've never been there. But I can SENSE it, I can see mountains and plains, rivers and lakes, coasts and deserts while I listen to Gordon Lightfoot. What's even more, I can FEEL happiness, or, in this song's case, loneliness and suffering from being separated far away from the ones you love. I can SEE that plane up above and a small, aching man down there, I can HEAR the engins roar, but I can also HEAR his sincere words that touch me, because i can IDENTIFY with that man's problems like every other man. I can SYMPHATIZE with him, without even knowing the reasons why he's left with only 1$ in his pocket, weather he spent it on women like he says or maybe not - it's not fair if he did, but it's also human to understand. And all that I can do not only on the account of the words, but very much due to an intimate sound of the music score itself. There's that melancholy mood floating all the way as the chords progress repeats over and over towards the end, and there's that soft spoken, warm voice of a man who undoubtedly knows the subject from his own experience, I guess. After listening to such songs something stays within you, not only you can hum the music, but you have an experience, one moment in life to learn about or to compare it with some of the moments you've already been through in your own life. Then you pull out the record with '707' on the cover rising above the yellow prairie, turn it on and you feel a rich man inside yourself.
Where did we go wrong - says in the title above, well, where did we? All I was saying about this song has got very little to do with commercialism, making covers from other authors' lyrics and compositions, not even playing the real instruments, but inserting discs of sampled sounds and rhythms. Today so many musicians (it would be better to call them 'stars' ) aren't even sufficient enough to sing the songs without playback, they usually don't play any instrument at all, and to think of writing the material themselves (both words and music!), I mean, come on! Furthermore, the lyrics are mostly stupid and the music mainly consists of the repeating rhythmic pattern which I call 'The Noise'. I can't recognize one song from another and I'm certainly not trying to analize the words, so I have to ask myself where have all the songwriters gone? We can download every song that's published in the world (I always rather listen to my old vynil LPs!), but we don't have to say nothing important to each other in those songs any more! Here I'm listening Gordon Lightfoot in Croatia and I feel like i've BEEN THERE, like I''ve been in America, at least in the state of mind! He's singing about a simple, ordinary man and the facts of pure life. It's no wonder at all why I could found so many of Gordon's lyrics here and why there exists so many covers of this song! Of course I'm not talking about all musical genres, but I am talking about the material often seen on today's TV and radio programmes by which young generations form thier opinion and experience in a very narrow way and it's obvious they don't know how to express themselves in any deeper way. Nevertheless, I hope I explained You why I decided to write a review about this song in particular. I hope you share some, if not all of my points of view, and that this will initiate some discussion and observations from other surfers. If you see Gordon Lightfoot or know his e-mail, let him know for this one. Best regards from Rijeka (which means The river), Croatia IVAN
