"I'll tell you 'bout Texas Radio and the Big Beat... I'll
tell you 'bout the hopeless night Wandering the Western
dream Tell you 'bout the maiden with raw iron soul" -- Jim
Morrison, "The Wasp"

The Cosmic Giggle must have been in full-tilt hysterics on
January 19, 1943 when the oil refinery seaport of Port
Arthur, Texas, won the heavenly crapshoot as the birthplace
of rock & roll's first female superstar, Janis Joplin. In
retrospect, Port Arthur's most famous daughter both defied
and defined the Texas town that raised, rejected, reviled,
then ultimately rejoiced in her brief, mad existence. In a
way that she never would have admitted then (but might
now), Port Arthur made Janis Joplin what she was -- a more
tolerant, nurturing atmosphere might have diluted the fi More...

    Review about Janis Joplin

    INCORRECT | Reviewer: Ward
------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

"The song is her sarcasm and her way of lashing out at the guy who's been hurting her and knowing Janis, this is most likely a true story."

    You are incorrect.
The song was not written by Janis Joplin, it was actually written by two guys, Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns.

    Sad Story | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

Song is all about her dysfunction as a woman and she keeps on going back to a guy who really cares less about her. He keeps on hurting her and breaking her heart but yet each time when she thinks she's had enough he comes back and the cycle starts all over again.

The song is her sarcasm and her way of lashing out at the guy who's been hurting her and knowing Janis, this is most likely a true story.

Janis was an amazing woman - an amazing talent. She is sorely missed.

------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

I think that this single refer to woman and how are they so tender too sweet but man can't see clear cause of selfishness. she tries to show that men are too proud to admit that they are wrong, they know that it is so "Deep down in your heart I guess you know that it ain't right". on the other hand women reman the same that wonderful creature ready to support and endure pain for her lover. this what means that woman are tough.'cause man can't and will never be able to endure such pain. THNX Ladies for being there for us.

The Best Ever | Reviewer: Jack
------ About the song Maybe performed by Janis Joplin

Janis gave us all of herself in her performances. She poured out her soul in this recording and held nothing back. For that reason, she has always been an inspiration to me.

I think this song is the best example. I'm 53 years old and have loved this song since I first heard it in 9th grade. For many years now it has been my all-time favorite song: my favorite recording by any artist, ever. I rarely hear it without wanting to hear it again, immediately. Obviously, it is not her most famous recording, but I have always wondered why it is not. Just listen to her heart, and listen again.

There is a live version of her doing this song, which is excellent, but not on a level with the studio version. Janis Joplin's recording is a cover version of a hit from the 1950's by The Chantels. If you listen to the original hit, you will experience one of many examples of how Janis Joplin could take someone else's material to a completely different level.

Good Ol' Times | Reviewer: jad
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

I quoted her in my high school yearbook! In the era before the internet, do you believe that we actually had to LOOK UP info about and lyrics from an artist? In a LIBRARY!! Or listen to the song till you were half deaf? I was so frustrated all those years ago, because I couldn't make out what she was saying about freedom. But I knew I agreed and wanted it in my yearbook photo. I ended up going with a less difficult-to-acquire quote of hers. Had I had the internet back then, it wouldn't have been a problem!

    Love | Reviewer: Caterina
------ About the song Maybe performed by Janis Joplin

I love Janis and I think that it is one of her best songs. In "Maybe" she prays a man to come back home to her, because she still loves him and she wants to apologise, she says "I guess I might have done something wrong,
Honey I'd be glad to admit it".
Janis believes in love. In all her songs she seems to be angry and sweet in the same time. She is the woman that every man would like to have, but she hasn't found true love yet.

Janis Joplin- Influential to the World | Reviewer: Alexandra W.
------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

Piece of My heart is about the individualism of Janis Joplins hard blues voice at which at her time was ignored because of famous artists such as 'The Beatles' and such were overtaking the music industry. Being a lead singer of a rock and roll band suprised people influencing ladies and girls all around the world to be indivual and stand up for their rights as women in the early 70's after she died an overdose to drugs much like other amazing artists in the music industry. Janis Joplin was an anti-sex symbol and showed that through her music that she was tough! She says that "a women can be tough" and saying "try me" to show that no matter how many times her heart is broken (or you "take a piece of her heart") she can continue life and pick her feet up and move on without a man.

That is the true Janis Joplin.

    Joan Osborne | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Son of A Preacher Man performed by Janis Joplin

The great Joan Osborne released a live version of this song on the early 90s. (She blows ALL the gals away who ever recorded it). Joan does sound quite like Janis Joplin so I can see how someone would think it was Janis singing.

listen to kris kristofferson's version... | Reviewer: jason
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

as the original, his version is very country and so states that it is a country song before he starts singing. then as he sings 'harpoon'...a harmonica starts 'blowing sad' when 'bobby starts singing the blues'.

it is pretty hard to read the referenced 'harpoon' to be anything but a harmonica.

to mistake it as a hypodermic needle and heroin isn't the furthest thing as janis loved smack and died shortly after recording her version from it. it is also easy to assume that it 'could' be a hypodermic needle as her version has no harmonica music in it...like kris kristofferson's did (who wrote the song).

he wrote it | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

Kris wrote the song about a fucking secretary he was fucking. The harmonica theory seems to be the most likely but to know for sure you would have to ask Mr. Kris.

------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

Bloody great song, it suprises me how much great music I find from that era, even though I listen to that era often, its like an endledd goldmine, people singing with feeling, although I have no idea what the lyrics mean, possibly coz im not american...

    NOT Janis | Reviewer: jacquie
------ About the song Son of A Preacher Man performed by Janis Joplin

yep - that's right. for a complete list of all artists who HAVE covered this song (and may i mention that this old woman thinks joss stone does a fine job of it) see the wikipedia article on the song. sorry folks, although janis was wonderful - she didn't cover this song written by john hurley and ronnie wilkins - who deserve to be herein credited. hurley was a recording engineer and renaissance kinda guy who first offered his gem to aretha franklin, who passed, allowing the world to hear the glorious chops of dusty springfield. later, aretha covered it on a b-side of something else. NOT janis. (this is prolly why the folks preaching janis never ante up the proof.

    Surprise | Reviewer: Jeroon
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

I am glad I finally understand what she was singing about :-) My mother used to turn her records, (Non-English here) , and as a child, I just sang along phonetically without knowing what I was singing about. To all important things we always create mysteries and intrigues, and I guess the Harpoon / Heroin gesture could well be 1 of them. Greetings from amsterdam, bye

JANIS DID NOT RECORD THIS SONG | Reviewer: Anonymous
------ About the song Son of A Preacher Man performed by Janis Joplin

Do some research retards. Although she covered this song back in the day, she never released her own version of the song. Every version you ever hear and for some dumb ass reason think is her (including the Pulp Fiction release) is really Dusty Springfield. There have been over 100 hundred artists remake this song including the likes of Arethra Franklin but never Janis Joplin!

    Hmm | Reviewer: Cat
------ About the song Maybe performed by Janis Joplin

I think that this song is really beautiful. I heard it on an episode of Tell Me You Love Me and fell in love with the sound.

interesting side note | Reviewer: Jason
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

I'm not sure about the heroine reference but that is interesting... I have however heard numerous times including a music history class that Janis re-did this song for Jimmy Hendrix (Jimmy was her Bobby) I always found that to be pretty neat

    Actually... | Reviewer: tmwinter
------ About the song Son of A Preacher Man performed by Janis Joplin

I've looked this up SEVERAL times on the internet, done research extensively on the song, and in NO TIME or PLACE did Janis Joplin ever do a released cover of this song. Maybe she sang it once upon a time in a concert, or something, but has never been put out by a record label. So, sorry to the post directly below me, but you're completely wrong. Out of the many MANY artists (yes, including Aretha Franklin) who sang this song, Janis Joplin was not one of them. And here's a tip: Limewire can be wrong, you know. They often give misinformed artist's names with the wrong songs. There's nothing wrong with doing a cover of a song, but...unfortunately, this is not Janis's remake. Deal with it...it's not that big of a deal.

kinda painful | Reviewer: Anonymous JC
------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

For me this song is very special 'cause it reminds me of some experiences I've had, i refer it to those painful moments we use to get when we love, the lyrics and that unique way of Janis to perform, really gives it that kind of feeling...superb, really helping for me.

Yes, "harp" does mean harmonica | Reviewer: Mac
------ About the song Me & Bobby McGee performed by Janis Joplin

look it up. also, why would she say harpoon? The idea of it being a heroine reference is one of the dumbest things I have ever read.

------ About the song Piece of My Heart performed by Janis Joplin

Having seen her live in Toronto I gotta tell you there was and is no one to compare.. at once sexy and dangerouse, and at the same time eliciting feelings of wanting to take care of her. Summertime, Ball and Chain, Piece of My Heart, Cry Baby. Never better. Best concert I ever attended.
