John Miles was born John Errington on St. George's Day,
April 23rd. 1949, in Jarrow, a town near Newcastle upon
Tyne, in the North East of England. Historically, Jarrow
will be remembered for the Jarrow Marchers, who, during the
depression of the thirties, travelled from there to London,
to lobby Members of Parliament about the extremes of
unemployment in the North.
As was very common during the fifties, John Miles was
intoduced to music through piano lessons, as were many
children of the time. He was quickly discouraged by the
rounds of necessary practicing, which bore little

------ About the album Play On performed by John Miles
This was the John Miles who sang on the AP project.
His very best and millenium editions were re issues of his work with Decca records
This was the only album john released on EMI Gus Dudgeon ex Elton John was brought in too produce and made changes including session musicians.
The album has little to do with john's pop rock past and is really a vocal album of the blue eyed soul genre and very good it is too. Bob Marshall who co wrote all john other albums and played bass on them still wrote the album lyrics but was not playing bass on the album as funkier lighter feel was required.
There are some great tracks on here. The right to sing is about the handcuffs that prevented john releasing an album for several years. Lovers of blue eyed sould would love this album it is as Bob marshall described lightweight and a summer album not dark or depressed. Fantastic soulful vocals abound but it was a step in a different and wrong direction . Emi spen zero promoting this album and the right to sing got little airplay as a single as a result. Emi dropped John after this and he signed to Valentino records and brought out "Transition" produced in part by Trevor Rabin which is back to Johns pop rock roots and featured ex metal drummer with yngwie malmsteen Barrymore Barlow. If you see this buy it you will not be dissapointed if you are looking for pop music but if you are a rocker avoid.
This is other John Miles... | Reviewer: Marcelo
------ About the album Play On performed by John Miles
I'm afraid this is NOT John Miles who played with Alan Parsons. There is no song from this album in "His Very Best" and "Millennium Edition" compilations. Besides, the track "Song for You", sounds very different from the early work of that JM.
This tune was first heard on TV when simply played by John Miles on piano alone on the Sunday night show Highway. This song was described by Sir Harry Secombe at the time as one of the most beautiful songs he had heard and i agree entirely with that sentiment.
To hear it in full vocal with the band as it reaches its cresendo eclipses his most famous 'music'. Shame that Jon is no longer actively recording such music
