This song reminded me of my best friend of over 20 yrs. when it came out. She had become an alcoholic and the struggle her husband was having with her sounded just like this girl. We all loved her so much but we couldn't help her. I played this cd for her on a road trip. She played this song over and over and sang along. That was the last time I ever saw her. It still makes me cry every time I hear it.

The one aspect of the lyrics that I see is that the guy seems to give up. "Let her go...let her walk right out on me" seems to be the point where he realizes that there is not much to be done and time will eventually take her away from him. The meaning of the song is sad, but it has managed to touch so many lives. H & the BF, you guys are awesome!

!Wow! I was living this song when it first came out...of course it was w-a-a-y before U-tube, but I felt like they were singing from my very own thoughts and emotions; and revealing them to the whole world...

She gave birth to our daughter...Later we divorced...recently she died at the tender age of 53.
I pray she had become Saved before she passed, and is thereby now in Heaven with Jesus...because, beneath it all she played her hand the best way she knew how; and I know she loved me in her own way...

My ex wife wasn't an addict, but it was the first song she asked I learn to sing and play on guitar (9 years ago). Going through a divorce now, and she gave up on our marriage first--cant play this without tearing up--good chords

Brilliant song, beautiful lyrics and vocals. H&TBF are so underrated its criminal.

@Jill - "Stipe" is referring to Michael Stipe from REM. The girl loves her dad more than anything, but Michael Stipe is close behind. For me, I find this little statement to be the most poignant and painful bit of the lyrics. It really humanizes this girl and makes it more tragic how badly her life has gone.

This is a song I can listen to over and over again, but what or who is "Stipe"? I could never figure it out. I even googled it and it was talking about insects and carapaces. That can't be right. I'm sure it's a slang word but even the slang dictionary on line didn't have it. Anyone out there help me out here?

This song has very personal connections. I once went out with a girl named Sandy from Greenville, South Carolina that had some of the problems the girl in the song has. She was the love of my life but she was never able to beat her problem and she died. Despite her problems, when I hear the song, I go back to that time. It was the happiest time of my life. I miss her.

this song makes me cry every time i hear it. it does have some personal connections to my life, but for some reason, i think that's not why i tear up. i think it's just that beautiful of a song, and that the singer's voice and the instrumentals all come together perfectly to make a wondrous melody that will become a timeless classic.
