A lady stands before an open window
Staring so far away
She can almost feel the southern wind blow
Almost touching her restless day
She turns from her window to me
Sad smile her apology
Sad eyes reaching to the door
Daylight loses to another evening
And still she spares me the word goodbye
And sits alone beside me fighting her feelings
Struggles to speak but in the end can only cry
Suddenly it's so hard to find
The sound of the words to speak her troubled mind
So I'm offering these to her as if to be kind:
There's a train every day leaving either way
There's a world, you know
There's a way to go
And you'll soon be gone -- that's just as well
This is my opening farewell
A child's drawings left there on the table
And a woman's silk lying on the floor
And I would keep them here if I were able
And lock her safe behind this open door
But suddenly it's so clear to me
That I'd asked her to see what she may never see
And now my kind words find their way back to me
There's a train every day leaving either way
There's a world, you know
You got a way's to go
And I'll soon believe -- it's just as well
This is my opening farewell

Review about MY OPENING FAREWELL A Great Song by One of the Greatest | Reviewer: Paul Odegard | 10/11/09
I began listening to Jackson Browne in high school. Can't count the hours singing along with him until I had the words, timing and vocals down, and I still turn to his songs for solace and connection to the teen and the man he has become over the years. "My Opening Farewell" reminds me of my mother and I the night before I left home for the Peace Corps. Thanks JB.
What a beautiful and painful song. One of JB's best, and an all-time favorite | Reviewer: Misha ben-david | 1/25/06
This is one of the greatest broken heart songs ever written, in my opinion. It's poignant, sad, dark and most vivid. I realize Jackson Browne is about as hip as racoon coats, but he is one of the most thoughtful writers of my generation. It's hard for me to dislike any JB song, and if I had to make a list of the ten best songs I've ever heard ( I'm a professional musician, former daily newspaper music writer, and owner of about 3,000 CDs ) this would be on that list or would be one of the last and most regrettable cuts from that list. There's a half dozen other JB songs that would merit consideration, too. BTW...check out Bonnie Raitt's wonderful cover of "MOF" with Jackson sitting in on her "Road Tested" live album.
