Review about Me, My Yoke And I
ob 1 | Reviewer: 5-htp/cannabis | 5/5/2008-=My hand going "understand"=- should be under stand, or at least that would be an interesting perspective on the use of the symbolism of something that 'stands', perhaps physiologically, in the mind, such as an idea/thought. An idea in ones mind, that perhaps he wishes to eliminate the accumulation of biased thought and prejudice built behind it by years of perceived experience on the matter, by going under it.
Play this on the guitar! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 12/8/2007
If the song is about masturbation, he makes a great job, because if you play this on the guitar, is a contantly movement, up an down on the guitar neck... just like... you know... =)
But about this thing that he said in a concert "masturbation as a teenager in catholic Ireland" Im pretty sure is about another song... I was on the concert and he said this for another that I dont remember.
Sometimes a song is just a song, you know... we dont have to understand this 100% or looking for things that didnt really are there... like...
Drum, Book, Fall, Fishing... sounds not like a sex for me... but... I like the idea!
Peace!

counter example 'Ryder'
the Ireland meaning of 'Yoke' doesn't really mean anything, since he is French, not Irish.
But yoke does mean combine, and it does fit it with your theory about the song.
And I'm pretty sure the 'My Fall' part is about him having an orgasm.
By the way; thanks for tainting the song for me.

Me, My Yoke And I | Reviewer: Ryder | 10/22/2007
I think this is a song about masturbating and the singer is pleading for someone to give him a bit of action so that he can stop having to do it himself. Charming I know.
Reasons: 1. In Ireland 'Yoke' can refer to your manhood. 'Me, My Yoke And I' suggests he's alone.
2. 'My Drum Gonna Make Ya Come', I think this refers to the monotony of the act and literally him beating himself.
3. 'Book' = Porno mag
4. 'My Hand Going Under', I don't think I need to explain that one.
5. Now, the 'My Fall' bit throws me a little. It could be that he's falling foul to doig something that he doesn't particularly like having to do. There might be an undertone of guilt there. Likewise with him being 'Mad Like A Big Dog' and I thing he then tries to justinfy the act with 'My God Gave Me A Rod', in other words, God gave me this, it's here for a reason, this is only nature.
6. 'Fishing'= His attempts to find (or catch!) a partner to do all this for him and relieve him of the guilt. And so he asks this person (or these people) to do all of this in the next few verses.
I feel dirty now. I have to say, although I am a big fan of Damien Rice I don't particularly like this song.
Delicate, now there's a masterpiece.
Biblical symbolism | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/23/2007
The drum, the rod, fishing are all biblical symbols. The book is probably the bible. The hand could be a reference to crucifixion.
Obviously all of these have more than one meaning in the context of the song. I think it's important to point out though, that they all share significance in religious text as well.
Are there also sexual overtones? Definitely. I think the song draws a lot of its power from the juxtaposition of sin and salvation.

it's about him discovering masturbation as a teenager in catholic Ireland, he said so himself at a concert

Listening to it I had little idea what was going on word wise, because it didn't particularly make sense. Yes, it's about sex. Nobody seems to want to get further than that, and maybe they're right, and there is no subtext, but was does screaming 'fishing' have to do with sex? Maybe it's an inside joke between him and a woman he perused with, and one of them said fishing accidentally and it was funny for the moment. I think he might be trying to be overdramatic to get to something too. Maybe the whole 'too emotional' thing comes into play, because he makes the song a very long song and the true intensity of the rest of the band's surprise attack only works once, and I think he knows that, but he directed (someone directed) them to do it twice, and I don't think that was a good call by whoever was in charge, unless there's an idea behind it and the only idea I can think of is that it is very dramatic and somewhat unnecessary but very real in the sense of human emotion, and the lyrics have some balls to them, because he's repeating some pretty intense/overdramatic kindof things over and over and he chose to do that consciously but I think they also seem kindof playful or at least towards the throughs that he can have fun with it while he sings it.
Sexy song | Reviewer: Michael | 7/6/2007
This song is clearly about sex. Not lovemaking, but sex. Raw sex, or ****ing, if you will. It's also about infidelity, about his need for sex, about his confusion with how he is, and his coming to terms with his own sexuality. It's a song written by a frustrated twenty-something, who's had a whole lot of pussy.
