Review The Song (12)Print the Lyrics
ba da da ba da da ba da da da ba da da da x2

looking from a window above, it's like a story of love
can you hear me
came back only yesterday
moving farther away
want you near me

chorus
all i needed was the love you gave
all i needed for another day
and all i ever knew
only you

sometimes when i think of her name when it's only a game
and i need you
listen to the words that you say it's getting harder to stay
when i see you

chorus

this is going to take a long time and i wonder what's mine
can't take no more
wonder if you'll understand
with just the touch of your hand
behind a closed door

chorus

Review about Only You

better history. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/21/10

I am remembering all my favorite songs now that my sons are in high school.. thinking of what history they will remember... songs like "Birthday Sex".. really... wow leaves nothing to the imagination.. I miss songs like this.. MISS the 80's....

Only You | Reviewer: Anonymous | 8/7/09

I've heard a duo do this song acoustically - it sounded fantastic, and a band here in my home town do it as a tribute to the 80's. But it just makes me want to tlisten to the original - ah the memories. Innocence, puberty, new wave punk - (hardcore eg - safety pin in the lappel of my school blazer?!) ... kissing girls in the orchard on the way home from school. (raise a glass) To the Girls!

Upstairs | Reviewer: Coreyism | 8/16/07

The entire album, Upstairs at Eric's, is fantastic and should be heard by all generations. It is a statement of the 80's but certainly transcends into the 90's and beyond. Everyone should be able to appreciate this song's simplicity. It's a real tear jerker.

What IS it about ? | Reviewer: Jeff | 6/18/07

I have had this tune in my head for the last few days. No reason except that it is such a sweet, simple, sparse tune. But it got me thinking: I don't really know what it is about. Which is why I looked it up here.

Reading the lyrics through, my guess: She is in a relationship but it is at the point where she thinks she may have to end it. She is feeling the detachment and pining wistfully for the earlier days when she only had eyes for her partner.

love it | Reviewer: karen '86 | 6/17/07

can't get this song out of my head. I heard it the other day. loved it when I was in high school and it still has the same effect on me. simple, yet beautiful. go figure.

baby song | Reviewer: meryl | 6/16/07

as odd as it may seem, this is the song that sends my 3 month old daughter to a peacefull place. I loved this song in high school and since I didn't know traditional baby songs Only You became my go to song to calm her or send her off to sleep

What about The Chocolate War?! | Reviewer: justine | 5/26/07

Dear veterans of the eighties, I implore you to take a stand for our music and its original movie music soundtracks. We can't let Johnny-come-lately television series be known as the the only vessels known for carrying such important music. This OUR past. Hell, the 50's vets have beach music, My Girl, 60's has Hendrix and the birth of all coolness, we must embrace our own radio heritage and take a stand.

We must pick up our old ghetto blasters, much like dear John Cusack, in 'Say Anything", and raise our hands up high, without throwing our back out supporting such apparatuses, and say, "This is my music! My special moment, ie, first kiss, loss of virginity, first boss I ever told to 'kiss my ass' was because of the influence of the lyrics from this song, or the course of action a hero took in a movie. (The Breakfast Club is a mighty fine example. When Judd Nelson tells his beloved principle to 'eat his socks'-which may or may not have been 'eat my shorts' but because of the lewd implications there are to suggesting that one might make a dinner of someone's unmentionables, has been permanently altered, in meaning and delivery,...well, I'm just not sure of the reason, but its the example that I think mid-level thirtians (really? Thirtians?) Should do.

But really, we owe the admission of Yaz' "only you" to that great film, "The Chocolate War", along with a general 'thanks' to many other wonderful eighties musicians, including Peter Gabriel, who contributed several songs to this soundtrack, as well as the infamous, or rather, just plain 'fabulous', and uplifiting love anthem, "In your eyes", from Say Anything.

Great song. Probably one of the prettiest and yet simple love songs ever written. I remember buying the album, yes album, Upstairs at Erics when I was back in high school and I just fell in love with this song. It was the one you wish was written for you. Kinda kwirky, but oh so sweet!
