Founded in 1990 in Sweden by vocalist and guitarist Mikael
Akerfeldt, Opeth specialized in fusing progressive-rock,
folk music, and heavy-metal.
Orchid (Candlelight, 1995) cast Akerfeldt's death-metal
growling and Peter Lindgren's epically distorted guitar in
roles (mid-tempo interludes, acoustic melodies, long and
tortured songs) that were not traditionally associated to
heavy metal, despite sounding like heavy metal.

Morningrise (Candlelight, 1996), their masterpiece, refined
that manner, particularly in the monumental suite Black
Rose Immortal.

My Arms Your Hearse (Candlelight, 1998), featuring the new
rhythm section of drummer Martin Lopez and bassist Martin
Mendez, sounded both more aggressive and more traditional.
It featured some of their most brutal More...

------ About the song The Grand Conjuration performed by Opeth

Um, just so you guys all know, opeth's singer mikael really does sing and scream on his own.. I've seen them in concert before. Its amazing that he can transition like that... he doesn't need a voice box... and he doesn't use it. Not trying 2 be rude... just saying.

Harvest = Amazing | Reviewer: Raven
------ About the song Harvest performed by Opeth

This song has a lot of meanings but I think personaly it could be about someone who had killed themselves bc it says "Into the orchard i walk peering way past the gate. Wilted scenes for us who couldn't wait." That strikes me as he's saying, these people couldn't wait to die and so its not gonna be the same as people who could wait for their time. and then when he's talking about the "Spirit painted sin, Embers neath my skin,Veiled in pale embrace, Reached and touched my face." He's (I think) talking about hell "ambers neath my skin"

and then this could be talking about death or the devil embracing him in hell "vailed in pale embarce, reached and touched my face"

    Or something like that.

------ About the song In My Time Of Need performed by Opeth

I just happened upon this great band on youtube. I absolutely love the ballads! In My Time Of Need is musically intriquing, vocally mesmerizing and a gem reminiscent of Foreigner, although I would never compare their genius to any band.

Check out the new Porcelain Heart video for great videographic technique, symbolism, and musical journeying (many styles combined). Note the Celtic drumming...the drummer is great!!!

Opeth's fave song | Reviewer: Andres
------ About the song Face Of Melinda performed by Opeth

This is my favorite song from Opeth, which also is my favorite group. The hole CD and its concept are great, Mikael's a really great songwriter. I love his voice in this song and I love the song itself. It's mellow at the beggining and then it turns pretty heavy, but Mikael doesnt screams, so it gives that cool contrast cof heaviness with mellowness

i do hope the person below doesnt really think a machine does his death and that he is only calling mikael a machine.

This song is awesome and very well done. One of my faves well this and bleak!

To the guy down this.. Mikael (the vocalist)doesn't change the voice multiple times... he just turn on the Death Vox (A machine to transform the voice in to this "screaming".

W/e today opeth is my favorite band.

    Great song.

------ About the song The Grand Conjuration performed by Opeth

This has to be one of the greatest songs by Opeth, I love his voice change
Not much people can sing like this, nor can some grunt as good has him, doing it both is insane ^^

The rythm is weird, indeed, but I also like it because it is not usual - otherwise it's just always the same...

In short: amazing song / amazing band

------ About the song In My Time Of Need performed by Opeth

This is a band, that in my opinion, is where all music that spawned from the rock/jazz generation should come to,
it is utterly AMAZING how they can combine so many different musical styles in their albums, awesome,
i thank my friend matt for introducing me to them :)

------ About the song Black Rose Immortal performed by Opeth

id never had the patience to listen to opeth properly unitl at a party it was all that was played by, lets say a slightly over enthusiastic fan, this was one song that really stuck out and since then i have to say ive been hooked, some of the most technically gifted musicians in metal to-date, not just playing but arranging and in transitions aswell.... also if you can last that long really good songs to play

------ About the song Hours of Wealth performed by Opeth

I agree with all of the above comments, and I want to add that this song has a letargic and melancholic feeling to it that makes me narrow my eyes and listen carefully once again to the crystal sounds. As you said, it really is amazing.

------ About the song Atonement performed by Opeth

ALl I can say is I watched this band rock the freaking house, then jerk tears from everyone around on the sounds of the underground tour, in 06. I was astounded at what a beautiful sound they have, how well the perform and the fact that they are swedish melodic metal, or that is my genre for them, but tell me the truth....they are the greatest.

My personal favorite band | Reviewer: AkerfeldtIsGod
        ------ About artist/band Opeth

A friend turned me on to Opeth a few years ago, and ever since they have been my favorite band, and may have even passed Pink Floyd as my favorite band of all time. I have always been into metal, but these guys blew my mind. I find it hard sometimes to listen to other metal bands (except perhaps Lamb of God and Chimaira), because their music just isn't as powerful and doesn't create the atmosphere that Opeth seems to conjure out of thin air. Akerfeldt is the true workhorse behind the band, writing most, if not all, of the music and lyrics. You can classify Opeth however you want, progressive metal, death metal, whatever. To me they are and always will be a genre within themselves that no one can touch. The switch to Roadrunner spooks me a bit, though, and the departure of Lopez and Lindgren:( ,was hard to swallow. But it's still Opeth....

Painfuly great music | Reviewer: Russell Miller
------ About the song Ghost of Perdition performed by Opeth

The singing contrasting with the death growls Mike delivers are just amazing in the way they go against each other and they bring out the colour in his lyrics unlike any other band.
Contrast is great, Opeths are experts at it.
This and Harlequin Forest are the best songs on the album.

The most amazing song i ve ever heard | Reviewer: Dawn Wanderer
------ About the song Black Rose Immortal performed by Opeth

Black rose immortal is one of the best songs, that opeth ever made, its lyrically amazing, and whatever it couldnt say in words, it described in the most beautiful music that ever entered my ears, i recommend this song to any music lover. Sure the song maybe 20 mins, but thats not a setback, it keeps unfolding more beautifully than the last time, black rose immortal will always be to me, and immortal song, and all time favourite.

Possibly Opeth's Greatest | Reviewer: Jorah
------ About the song The Grand Conjuration performed by Opeth

This song is one of opeth's best if not their best. It has a nice change up of rhythms throughout, and it still manages to keep that forward rhythm through all of the volume changes.

"the beat at the start sounds like it theres no rhythm what so ever but it still sounds awsum!"

Welcome to the world of odd time signatures, this is because when you tap your foot to it, you come up with 6 beats in a measure rather than the usual feel of 4 beats.

Can't Be Explained... | Reviewer: Luna
------ About the song In My Time Of Need performed by Opeth

This song, any song, performed by Opeth is one that will take a hold of you and move you in a way you can't explain. Opeth has the ability to capture your soul and you become so willing to give it up.

One thing I find really amazing about Opeth is their level of sounds. Opeth has such an array of style. Regardless, Opeth has a unique sound. This unique sound... let's just say that my mother normally doesn't like my music, but she'll listen to Opeth and even asks to listen to this song.

Check out the band... seriously. You'll thank yourself later. =]

    Simply awesome! | Reviewer: Anonymous
        ------ About artist/band Opeth

Ya, I know! I agree that most good reviews have the very same title as mine. But, I mean it, because my playlist for the last one week doesn't contain songs from any other band apart from Opeth! (Yep, it has their 60 songs on shuffle)

I really started listening to good music only 2 years ago. So, I listened to all the classic rock songs, all the famous ones until very recently. I also experimented with a lot of genres, varying from jazz to hard rock(not yet into metal, till Opeth of course).

Finally I landed on Opeth. The first song I heard was Windowpane. That sounded very beautiful back then, but it sounds sick(almost as if it is just too normal!) compared to their other songs that I have been listening to recently. (Sorry, that's just my personal view) Next, I heard "To bid you Farewell". Aah, one of the most melodious songs ever! I could close my eyes and listen to it all day long. (And I did do that for a few weeks not so long ago!)

Even then, I couldn't bear myself to listen to the other Opeth songs just because I wasn't accustomed to growling. Then I heard that Steven Wilson was involved with a lot of Opeth projects. Being a huge Porcupine Tree fan, I decided to give it another shot. From then on its been a beautiful ride :)

I guess the reason that Opeth is so enticing is because its music is so powerful and so different from the normal stuff that we hear. They are the only ones that I know of who uses acoustic guitars so beautifully, in harmony, with electric and distortion guitars. The superb riffs and transition in the vocals from growling to melodious singing almost makes me high on music!

    My current favourites are:

    April Ethereal
    The Baying Of The Hounds
    Closure
    Demon Of The Fall
    The Drapery Falls
    Harvest
    The Lepper Affinity
    When

This list keeps changing every week or so. Being a huge fan of Progressive music(Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater etc), I am hoping that Opeth will bring more out on that genre. One thing is for sure. Opeth is so ahead of its times that it will be remembered(30-50 years ahead maybe), for breaking the genre-barriers and making melodious and inspiring music. Two words: Simply awesome!

The greatest band ever, every song is greater then the other... i've never heard any other band who can deliver such style and emotions!

------ About the song Face Of Melinda performed by Opeth

They perform this so well live. This is truely a gem. Mikael's songwriting and poetry really combine into a testiment that great musicians are still here, only hidden. I've been a fan since I first heard them, Blackwater Park LP, and have indulged in their entire careers worth of work since, early to present. They are never bored, never stale, and always persistant in their musicianship. "The Beatles" to the realm of metal in their revolutionary music. "Pink Floyd" in their artistic statement. Scratch all that. They are Opeth.
